Upcoming IACA Training Opportunities

Dear Joel,

Greetings from the IACA Training Committee! We have several training updates for 2024 that we wanted to make you aware of.

New Online Training Topics

Crime Mapping I: GIS Fundamentals

This course provides training on using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for crime and intelligence analysis, focusing on fundamental concepts of crime mapping, while also offering a license to ArcGIS Pro for 18 weeks.

Administrative and Strategic Analysis

The Administrative and Strategic Analysis course delves into the administrative and strategic facets of crime analysis, encompassing topics such as crime reporting, operational analysis, staffing studies, administrative forecasting, DDACTS, and Risk-Terrain Modeling.

Reducing Local Crime with Risk Terrain Modeling - in collaboration with Simsi

This course focuses on using problem-oriented policing, situational crime prevention, and Risk Terrain Modeling (RTM) analytics to reduce local crime through evidence-based decision-making, community engagement, and efficient resource utilization. This class is presented in collaboration with Simsi and is taught by Dr. Les Kennedy and Dr. Joel Caplan.

These three classes are now open for registration and the first session of each starts January 1st, 2024. They will each be offered 4x (once per quarter). This brings our total catalog of online classes up to 13 different topics ranging from beginner to advanced. No matter your experience level nor employment status, we have a class for you! If you're not sure where to start, check out our training roadmap for some guidance! We're also always willing to talk with you personally about your specific situation to determine the best fit. We also have a generous transfer policy if you find a class isn't the right fit. All 12-week classes result in 60 hours of Continuing Education credit for those who pass.

2024 Webinar Series

The 2024 webinar series is all about Tactical Crime Analysis! This monthly webinar series will walk you through the entire tactical analysis process: from identifying a series, forecasting, tactical products, effective responses, all the way to post-arrest considerations. Instructors will provide real world examples and demonstrate techniques. These sessions are taught by a suite of experienced IACA instructors: Angela Backer-Hines, Christopher Bruce, Dawn Reeby, and Jennifer Zawitz. Every session will be recorded, so if you can't attend a particular session, you can sign up to receive the recording immediately. Click here to see all the details and register.

Update to Pricing

Since the inception of our online training program in 2011, we have consistently provided crime analysis curriculum that delivers comprehensive knowledge and valuable skills, resulting in 60 hours of continuing education credits for passing students who take a 12-week class. Over the years, we have continuously refined and expanded our course content to ensure relevance and effectiveness in meeting the evolving demands of the industry. In that time, we've grown our catalog of courses from one to 13 different topics and added several languages. Over 3,300 students have participated in a 12-week class from 55 different countries. But as the IACA's training program has grown, so have our costs to run it.

We take pride in our commitment to delivering exceptional value to our members, and we have worked hard to keep our prices stable for more than a decade. However, as the cost of maintaining and enhancing our program has increased due to inflation, technological advancements, and the continuous improvement of our curriculum, we find it necessary to make a modest adjustment to our pricing.

Effective July 1st, 2024, the cost of a full IACA class (either online or in person) will be adjusted from $395 to $445 for IACA members and from $445 to $520 for non-members. Any registration for a full class made before July 1st will be locked in at the current (lower) rate. Starting with 2024 sessions, webinars will increase from $10 to $15 for members and $20 to $30 for non-members. Or, you will have the option to purchase a "series pass" for all 12 webinars in the yearly series at a 25% discount for a total price of $135.

We understand that any price change may raise questions, and we want to assure you that this decision was not made lightly. The additional revenue generated will be directly invested back in IACA training in things like curriculum development and technological infrastructure. In 2023, we offered 30 different webinars that were completely free for our members, and we remain committed to providing as much free training for our members as is feasible. It may not be 30 every year, but we will do our best. We also have 150+ different videos in the webinar library in three different languages that are available to you completely for free as part of your IACA membership. You can watch these any time you like, as many time as you like, and can earn a certificate for each one. We're also constantly adding more videos as time goes on.

Make sure you subscribe to the Training category of the Forum so you receive new training announcements by email. We will continue to add classes throughout 2024 that you won't want to miss!

If you have any questions, please email the Training Committee at trai...@iaca.net and we will be happy to discuss any of our classes in more detail with you.
