Weeds and Sins

Dear Brothers and Sisters
This is a writing I wanted to do about two years back and then did not want to, but time and again I felt that I need to write. I trust that the Holy Spirit wants me to write this, so here I go.
We have a small plot of land of about 10 perches (about 253 m2) set aside for growing a few fruit trees, vegetables as well as have a bit of green. From the outset, it had been full of a variety of weeds including a type of grass quite tall. At the beginning a person applied a weedicide twice stating that would be the end of all weeds. But they grew back. Next we tried clearing the land using mamoty and rake several times, but still they grew back.
As time went by, I tried employing people to uproot the weeds, but it was not done well. So I started doing it myself, but I was exasperated by the sheer task, as by the time I move onto a new area, the previous area will have weeds growing back. One day I prayed to Holy Spirit, while in the midst of weeding, to help me get rid of the weeds. And as I continued with the task, suddenly I felt the way I did the weeding was wrong. The direction I had was to get rid of the fast spreading weeds first. This I started doing day after day, and as you may have guessed, it started showing results. So, then I started praying to the Holy Spirit to show me those weeds I was concentrating on. This prayer was answered, over and over, in the following days – but in the middle of it, Holy Spirit made me feel a different thing altogether. That is, the weeds, in some sense, were similar to my sins and one way of overcoming them was to concentrate on the ‘fastest spreading first’.
Now, this should not be construed as the only way of overcoming sin. For some, a good Confession can be like a full garden clean-up. For others, a good Retreat will be like getting the entire garden replaced with new grass. If it works in either of the latter two ways, that would be the best. If only you are like me, random types of sins surfacing from time to time, try praying to the Holy Spirit requesting to be shown where the ‘fastest spreading ones’ are.
Some lessons I learnt:
Fast spreading weeds are easier to get rid of, if I concentrate on them, and am able to weed them before they start blooming – so are certain sins
Some weeds are well concealed, like those spreading their roots underneath other plants, so there is a need to see where the roots are spread – so are certain sins
Some weeds have little yams well away from the roots we unearth, so need to search for the yams and remove them too – so are certain sins
Some weeds that have been ‘extinct’ from my garden, re-appear all of a sudden after an absence of, sometimes an year or more, but more often after a few months, probably their seeds having been carried with the wind – so are some sins
Some new weeds can appear too, some of them not just small weeds, but those that can grow on to become big trees – and some had found their way to the top of a 24-foot structure, where my water tanks are located. May be birds carried the seeds – so are some sins.
An important point to note is that this experience need not be “weeds and sins” all the time. For somebody working in an office it may be a “scraps of paper and sins”; for another person spending more time in a kitchen it could be through “food waste and sins.” What is important is to let Holy Spirit speak to us through our everyday activity. Holy Spirit is THE Direct Promise of Jesus.
