Hi,
As you might be aware, noted activist-danseuse, Mallika Sarabhai,
will be standing for the Lok Sabha elections to be held in April 2009
from Gandhinagar. I believe her standing, as well as that of many
other such culturally active, vocal people is great news. It brings
to political life the experience and comment of great value and
credibility.
For years, the country has unfortunately understood the ‘cultural’ as
separate from mainstream political or economic, when, infact, the
demand for cultural transformation informs the much-needed contextual
and holistic growth of the country that we need today.
Whether as a danseuse, choreographer, actress, writer, or as someone
engaged with development work through her multi-faceted organization
Darpana (www.darpana.com), she has been vocal against the cultural
degradation of the country and its unified fabric. Having stayed away
from standing for elections since she was first offered this in 1984,
her jumping into politics now is both a sign of hope and
encouragement. Her candidature needs support. Your support in
publicly backing her through her website can help in communicating to
the people of India that an independent voice like hers and many
others, can still make a difference, in a world gone wrong.
I am writing to request you to think about this, and to come forward
and do this for a secular India. Please let me know if this would
interest you, and also if you could suggest this to other friends
from the public arena whose opinion will matter. Please help in
spreading the word and coming out in your support. more on this is at
