to Rise India! Our time is now!
Dear All,
I share ritesh's views that this forum does not merely
have to remain a discussion area. We must implement ideas to really
make a difference.

I have been discussing the following idea with friends recently and we
would be executing it very shortly in Jalandhar. I am sure this idea
can be applied in other Indian cities as well.

Why do we throw things whereever we like - 2 main reasons - Can't be
bothered and Couldn't find a bin.

We will target areas with food vendors where people tend to throw
things in all directions for the lack of a dustbin and for the lack of
the desire to keep their surroundings clean.

We will supply these areas with commercial bins (funded by sponsors or
fund raising). More importantly however we will follow up the
placement of dustbins with voluteer service who will set examples
through their actions. Our volunteers would pick up litter in front of
the defaulters and put in the bins (stage 1).

We are roping in well known local faces to be volunteers as well. We
might arrange video filming of this activity to embarass defaulters.
Our volunteers will be provided with some sort of visual
identification (Rise India Jacket or Sweatshirt).

Members will need to arrange a meeting with the corporation
officials / mayor to seek assitance from their end (ie emptying bins
on a daily basis).

Cost commitment - minimal. bins won't cost much.

The key factor will be volunteer service. The volunteers will need to
follow up area by area.
Sensitization of hawkers/vendors and some incentives will need to be
decided.

Those interested for further details for Jalandhar or to implement
this project in their neighbourhoods, please call me on +9878529268.

Kindly post pictures on this forum to motivate others.

I know we are all busy but I am sure we can spare some time. Let's do
something!

"Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve. You don't have
to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject
and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul
generated by love."

appears a laudable thing you've started there in Jalandhar.

I am on a visit to Kolkata.
ONLY way to tele-reach me now is to call 033-2521-6877

Take care

Hi Simer,

I welcome your plan. Do you already have started execution of this plan. If yes how u carried it?  I had a thought on this plan but do you think this will be as feasible in a metro city like Delhi? Or do we need some different plan for such a huge city?

And another thing, Is there any member of this group from Delhi region as i also need a company of few members to start such things.
More suggestions and participations welcomed.

Thanks and regards,

Thanks for your replies.

Two things we need to focus on as a group-

Increase multi city membership (Use your contact list guys, just send
an email across to everyone, we seem to do that all the time when we
forward emails!)
This will increase participation and execution.

Secondly,
Responding to Ritesh's query-
No we have not executed it yet but we are aiming to finish it by the
end of Jan.

You can implement this in any city, regardless of the size, because we
will begin targeting small areas and we will not move forward until
that area has become self sufficient.

The cost is minimal. What you will need is your convincing /
influencing power to rope in the help of the hawkers by highlighting
to them the benifits of such an activity.

To start, you need one commercial bin, 2 volunteers, an ID tag of some
sort and your will to make a difference!

God bless

Hi,

I am a new member in this group and joined today only.
I think this plan is a need but I am sorry, I barely agree with the
execution plan.

If we start making video clips, we are generating some fear factor in
peoples mind.
They, may be in best case, start using BINs in the video covered area,
but you can't monitor whole city with video cameras.

I think we, instead, should start raising awareness, instead of a fear
factor with some fresh ideas (as I think picking up the litter and
throwing it will just remind them of Munna bhai and nothing much)

My openion is that

1. We can install nice looking bins like rabbit shaped holding the bin
etc. so that people (specially kids) gets attracted towards the same
and get into a habit of using the same.

2. We should ensure covered dustbins/regular cleaning, as, people
don't use the ALREADY INSTALLED dustbins because of the smell around
that area.

I apalogise, in case you feel on the plan a bit aggressive. But I just
presented my opinion.
Teach people with love, they will pick up much more :) (atleast when
they have an option not to follow you)

Regards,
Puneet.

Hi Puneet,
Welcome onboard! You certainly don't have to be sorry
to be yourself. We respect your views and we feel its always good to
have new ideas to further the cause.

We have ground tested the idea with a hawker location and we feel that
as a starting point, it offers an inexpensive way and non-
confrontational way (without crossing over into what is supposed to be
the MC's responsibility) to create awareness. Video clips will be used
only for internal purposes and may not have to be used at every
location.

I am sure, as we go along, we will be able to take into account your
suggestions to take it to the next level.

While we get the t-shirts / id's printed, it might be a good idea to
take the first step using a bin and testing the idea for yourself.

Nothing better than actually doing it...

Regards
Simerjeet.

Dear Debanik and Puneet,

I am waiting for you people to come to Delhi so that we can gather few more like minded people and start doing something. I have one very good place in my mind, Old delhoi railway station, where u can't find even a single dustbin on most of platforms. People are throwing things on railway tracks giving the station os capital a deserted look and really very bad smell all around.

I will like your suggestions as well. I have few more friends as well that are ready to work on same cause.

And after Mumbai attacks, we are getting a strong feeling as if Indians are waking up. Just one fear in mind that our Indian people  are very short of memory. Lets hope this time we all really take this as challenge and act.

Regards,
Ritesh Sharma
