I wanted to create a font using American typewriter bold as a foundation. Why choose this? I am of an age when my educational theses, my mailed letters and later the scripts and running schedules I worked to professionally, were all typed; either by manual or electronic mechanical typewriters. It is still, to me, the most beautiful and evocative of fonts; even though in its current derivation, it is no longer a slab serif.*

*a slab serif (also called mechanistic, square serif, antique or Egyptian) typeface is a type of serif typeface characterized by thick, block-like serifs Typewriter slab serif typefaces are named for their use in strike-on typewriting. These faces originated in monospaced format with fixed-width, meaning that every character takes up exactly the same amount of horizontal space. This feature is necessitated by the nature of the typewriter apparatus.

Over the years, American Typewriter has only undergone slight changes. All of its letters look the same as the original release except for the characters &, $, R and e, which have since had some design adjustments. The font comes with six different weight options: regular, light, bold, condensed regular, condensed light and condensed bold. All of those styles also come as italics, though some releases of the font do not include italics, including the release on the Apple operating systems.

Electronic Doc licensing allows the embedding of fonts in electronic publications, like eBooks, digital magazines and journals. At checkout, just specify the number of issues. Yet if the font is not embedded but used to create a static image, like the cover of an e-book, you will need a separate Desktop font license. Each Electronic Publishing license is valid for one year. This also covers format variations, and updated versions of publications that are issued free to already existing readers. However every new issue of an e-periodical is considered a separate, new publication, as are newly issued versions of existing publications. Learn more about licenses for Electronic Doc

Though not a very old font, American Typewriter is one of the best known and loved fonts. Created in 1974 for International Typeface Corporation by Tony Stan and Joel Kaden, American Typewriter was designed to mark the 100th anniversary of the invention of the office typewriter.

The goal in creating the typeface was to retain the unmistakable look of typewriter type, while overcoming some of its flaws, like poor readability. For this reason, unlike most true typewriter fonts, American Typewriter offers a proportional design, meaning the characters do not all have the same width. This makes it much more readable than the type from standard typewriters.

American Typewriter stands out due to its vintage typewriter style. The letters exhibit imperfections, slight inconsistencies, and a touch of irregularity, replicating the look and feel of actual typewritten characters. Function: Many fonts contain alternate glyph designs for a purely esthetic effect; these don't always fit into a clear category like swash or historical. As in the case of swash glyphs, there may be more than one alternate form. This feature replaces the default forms with the stylistic alternates. The user applies this feature to Industria to get the alternate form of g.

Function: Adjusts amount of space between glyphs, generally to provide optically consistent spacing between glyphs. Although a well-designed typeface has consistent inter-glyph spacing overall, some glyph combinations require adjustment for improved legibility. Besides standard adjustment in the horizontal direction, this feature can supply size-dependent kerning data via device tables, "cross-stream" kerning in the Y text direction, and adjustment of glyph placement independent of the advance adjustment. Note that this feature may apply to runs of more than two glyphs, and would not be used in monospaced fonts. Also note that this feature does not apply to text set vertically. The o is shifted closer to the T in the combination "To."
