Hello guys, I'm a big enthusiast of ripple. In fact, I'm trying to leverage the web of trust (lines of credit in Ripple) within the Spanish speaking community in bitcointalk: http://bit.ly/RippleBTCIMHO, Although highly unlikely under the current implementation, ripple is called to shake up our current credit system the same way bitcoin is revolutionizing the payment industry.Having a good currency like bitcoin is not enough, now we need to build a network to ease the access to the credit. However, as an old user of Ripplepay, ripplexchange and raindroplet I have to say that the new Ripple.com implementation from OpenCoin will have a difficult time attracting users to their platform. First of all, they have to solve the distribution problem they are having with their newly minted coin (XRP) and release the code of their current ripple server implementation. As a big fan of FLOSS (Free Libre and Open Source Software), I think it's an unacceptable practice to lock down the source code of the server, just to avoid competitors to make an alternative and better implementation.I hope they change their minds and speed up the release of the code soon, very soon as I don't feel comfortable having to play by OpenCoin's rules. Most of the people I know from the open source community won't even give ripple a second chance because of the control that OpenCoin is exercisingAnyway I'm open to start using ripple with small amounts of coins and fiat money. I will like to start growing my list of contacts, so I will add a small line of credit to any person that ask me for it if there is a clear PGP Trust path between us. Please feel free to add me to your Ripple contact lists, my address is rGUrehcNthxydn9RXg7NAFBAiCzr2gQKYQ--Email contact: https://privacybox.de/bitcoiner.msg (Key-ID: 0x82C47638).

We don't think the distribution problem will prevent people from adopting Ripple as a payment platform and that's where we see the growth for at least the next year or so. That said, we want a good distribution because we plan to use the distribution to encourage adoption of Ripple as a payment platform.

That's not why we haven't released the source code of the server. Once the server is released, many validators will quickly not be under our control. Of course, that's the whole point. But that will mean that every change to the network's rules will have to obtain a consensus. We've sometimes made those kinds of changes several times a day. By intentional design, Ripple's rules are very hard to change once the network is distributed.
I hope they change their minds and speed up the release of the code soon, very soon as I don't feel comfortable having to play by OpenCoin's rules.
We agree that this is something holding back the adoption of Ripple and we plan to remedy that as soon as the advantages exceed the disadvantages.

Right, and OpenCoin wants broad adoption. We all agree it's in our interest to get it open sourced and distributed as soon as possible. That's a major landmark for us and nobody wants us to be there as quickly as possible more than we do. I can assure you, nobody on the team is trying to find ways to do things more slowly.

I live in Canada and finding it difficult to get started.

What are you trying to do exactly and where in canada abouts are you?
Hi dan, thanks for the help. I actually used ripple union to fund my account via gift cards but at this time they don't offer any other way to use them as a gateway to the ripple system to move in and out money. ( that I'm aware of ) they said they were working on this option. Also I looked Into we exchange as they deal in canadian currency but I have read that they are very unreliable right now and are having problems. Not a chance I want to take with transferring money. If you have any other ideas please share, it would be much appreciated. Thanks
Will
