IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 (also called IL-2: 1946) is both the title of an add-on and a compilation release of the combat flight simulation game IL-2 Sturmovik. In that latter case, it is sometimes called IL-2 Sturmovik: Complete Edition. Created by the Russian games developer 1C:Maddox Games and published by Ubisoft, IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 takes place during World War II. The add-on from which the compilation takes the name 1946 was released in December 2006 as downloadable content (DLC) only, same as Sturmoviks over Manchuria (DLC in December 2006) and Pe-2. That latter was an add-on already released at the time (as DLC too), it was on sale since the month of May. The compilation IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 was published in December 2006 in double DVD format, one DVD for the software and a second DVD for bonuses.
The 1946 add-on was released in 2006 and assumed a fictional basis: World War II still rages in an alternate year of 1946 and aircraft like the He Lerche or the FW Ta 183 have become flyable operational aircraft.
The IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 compilation DVD came with all of the updates and expansions of the base game before it, up to version 4.07. Ubisoft released the pack in stores in December 2006 in Europe and Australia; North American release was on 13 March 2007. In addition to all of the above games, it includes the three new add-ons released in 2006: Pe-2 (already released in May 2006 as online downloadable content) and the two add-ons newly included in the package: Sturmoviks over Manchuria and 46, adding new missions, planes, and maps to the game.
The game was met with positive reception upon release. Review aggregator Metacritic gave IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 a score of 86 out of 100,[2] while another review aggregator, GameRankings, gave it 85.38%.[1]
I've had trouble for a while getting IL-2 1946 to work on my Windows 10 PC. It used to run fine on older versions of Windows (7 in particular, but I believe I was able to get it to work in 8.1 as well), but it seems that I cannot get it to load in Windows 10 at all. I have the GoG version and installed it outside of Program Files (86x), but that seems to have done nothing. Turning on compatibility mode also did very little.
Seems I have fallen behind with what can and can not be done regarding VR capability with a modded and possibly the stock version of IL-2 1946. I found a thread started in 2019, VR in IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 / BAT works! OMG! Meaning of life found!, over at Special Aircraft Service by UberDemon (Also danzigzag) detailing what needs to be done for it to work.
I recently bought 1946 (v 4.13.4m) but haven't been able to get the game to view properly on my 27" widescreen monitor, running Windows 10. The display is only about 19" with black around the edges. Other fixes I found recommend disabling display scaling on high DPI settings. However, I don't seem to have that option (see screenshot). Any recommendations?
Another member messaged me & recommended that I go into the IL-2 1946 folder, open the conf.ini file, change the width & height of my screen resolution to match my screen, and save with the new numbers. It worked. Thanks!
IL-2 1946 displayed well on my 24 inch monitor, with a few config changes, but since I just upgraded to a 27 inch monitor 1946 is unplayable. Unplayable in the sense that yes it will launch, but is rendered in a 640 x 480 format, with the menu page being partially cut off. The yellow cursor is visible but as soon as I attempt to make a selection, it disappears and locks up, forcing me to close the program via task manager.
Since 1946 worked well on my 24 inch monitor my hunch is/was that it's not my PC, but FWIW, I'm running Windows 10. I'm now wondering if it is an issue with a recent Windows 10 update a week ago or so.
Many thanks for this pointer! This solved my issue of partial screen display and no mouse input. Looking forward to getting back into flying via IL2 1946 and the BAT modpacks. Who knows? I may even break out the VR ?
I know this thread is a bit old, but the original poster displayed a window one step short when he asked his question. I don't use Steam so below is what I do to render the UI properly in all of my installations of IL-2 Sturmovik 1946.
Right Click the desktop icon. Click on properties. Click on the compatibility tab. Click on Change high DPI settings which will bring up another small window. Check the box Override high DPI scaling behavior. Scaling performed by: application. Then click okay. When you launch IL-2 1946 the UI rendering should be sized correctly for you to interact with it.
I just purchased IL2 1946, and it at first wouldnt open at all... It would just have the blue cirle spin for about 2-5 seconds and then it would dissapear, and nothing would happen. I uninstalled and reinstalled (Btw, this is the steam version on a windows 7) and I just found a website to show me how to put the game into the compatibility mode for Windows 7. I went to go open IL2 1946, and it loaded, then a black screen came up. It flashed a few times, then it just went away and my steam library was open.... Does anyone know what happened? Please tell me if you can, and replies are appreciated!! Thanks!! If you have a solution or an idea for one, please let me know!!
VP Modpack is for version 4.12.2M only, as far as I know. It's well worth the download, I have four separate installs of 1946, and VP Modpack is the one I play the most. it's WWII only, the maps have been re-textured, and it's just perfect for offline single play, as it has so many campaigns and missions already installed in the pack.
Thank you for asking this question. As I have been playing IL-2 since 2004. Even though IL-2 1946 is over 10 years old, it's still worth playing. With the current patch: 4.13.4, you can fly over 300 aircraft ( If you install mods like CUP/BAT, or HSFX, whatever the last one is called, you can fly all sorts of aircraft). Yes, it is old, like the Stalingrad and Kuban maps in BOS are better than the 2 in 1946, some of the damage effects as a result of bullets/ flak are dated, crashes can be unrealistic and unforgiving as any impact above 250km/h on most planes will kill you, if you hit a fence at 5 km/h, you also die. Despite these, it's still worth playing. There is currently a group called Team Daidalos that releases official patches for the game. Since releasing their first patch, 4.08 back in 2007, the team has done a fantastic job as many new aircraft (flyable and non-flyable) have been added like the B-24D, Po-2, SB-2, early Me-110s, SM.79, Hs-129, Pe-8, IL-4, B5N2, etc. Maps such as MTO, Slovakia, New Britain, even the remote Svalbard have been added, some have been/are being updated such as Solomon islands, Moscow were you can fly over the Kremlin, Murmansk. In the future there will be a Channel map similar to Cod, Franz Josef land, Donbass, Tunisia. Future flyable aircraft are MBR-2, He-177, Gladiator II, Dewoitine D.520, C-47, Ju-52. Many effects have been updated in these patches such as bomb fuses, realistic fires, improved graphics, and many other fixes. Comparing 4.13.4 to 4.07, they are almost separate games.
Regarding mods, I tried them a few years ago and I liked the ships and maps that you could download, but I wasn't that fond of several aircraft, mostly the Japanese ones. But hey, there are people out there that love the modded IL-2 1946. I believe that IL-2 1946 is definitely still worth getting as you can jump from Russia to the Pacific. I feel that for now, IL-2 1946 is better than IL-2 Great Battles, but this may change in the future.
Cut my teeth on IL2 1946 and loved it. Now play IL2 box. But I miss all the planes that were in IL2 1946. The reason I fly IL2 BoX is the servers are populated. Are there any servers that are populated for IL2 1946? (when I say populated I mean numbers like 50 to 70 players)
My opinion is that 1946 could probably have had 10 more years had all the core features braking backwards compatibility been implemented no matter what instead of leaving them out or rewriting them for the instant benefit of keeping more of the mods alive.
I just made the jump to BoX Series and it's definitively great. I love the career mode. But i won't let go my trusty Il-2 1946 4.12.2 install with the vp-media modpack (and countless mods on top). Just finished a DCG campaign mission with more than 70 planes left after the action ! Runs incredible smooth and still looks amazingly good .I doubt there will be any sim around you could individally customise in a comparable way for years to come. Flying a Me-109 F4 does feel astoundingly similar in both sims. And then there's still Rof...All three sims are great, couldn't decide which one i like most, my only problem is lack of time .So i kicked the fourth one.
Think a lot of people just like to hate on the new stuff when it clearly does so much far better. You might as well turn off advanced engine modeling in 1946 because all you need to worry about is overheating when pushing the throttle past 100%, never need to touch rpm, never need to mess with the radiators, no mixture settings, very, very basic modeling. The game as a whole is very fun, but it's complicated to get certain things working. BOx is much easier to get online and flying, and the career mode just works, messing with DCG and dgen, it's all a crap shoot.
Also having to fly with the engines running so hard really kills the immersion for me. I love the big battles, but basically having the plane on full blast the entire flight is pretty darn lame. Running say 1.1 ata at 2300 rpms in a 109 f4 in il2 box you'd be doing like 430 kph in 1946 you'd be doing about 200kph.
