It seems like its been an awfully long time since we've seen an update
for this application, has there been any news on when they will fix
the current issues? Is there a new beta download I'm missing? I'm
currently on 1.5.5b

It looks like the current version 1.5.5 came out a year ago in June
2010, and 1.5.5b is the current beta, which came out in December
2010. No updates since then, although there have been a number of
DVDs that have come out that the current version has had problems
with. I would expect an update soon.

I just sent them a message via their contact form, but at this point I
have pretty much given up on the app. The original developer who
created ripit was a great developer and tried to take care of the
people who bought his app. From what I have seen the little app
factory is extremely slow getting anything released for any of their
apps. I really wish the original developer hadn't sold the app to the
little app factory, but oh well... time to go back to handbrake.

With the slow updates of Ripit, I generally use Mac DVD Ripper Pro,
and use Ripit only as backup. The developer of MDRP does an excellent
job maintaining the software. Handbrake does not come out with enough
updates either, so I use MDRP or Ripit to first prep a 1:1 copy prior
to compressing with Handbrake. Although, I do maintain 1:1 backup
copies of all my DVDs.

I just purchased RipIt. I'm a bit disappointed to hear about the degraded support.

I tried ripping "No Strings Attached" which failed. I wrote TLAS and was told they would look into it.

After googling and finding this group I realized that this and other recent discs were known problems.

My concern is that the RipIt support person did not know this, and therefore I wonder if I wasted my money.

Doesn't Handbrake use VLC to rip? VLC has nightly builds you might
have better luck with.

Ripit support used to be stunning, virtually every thread on the old forum had some input from TLAF, but their participation dwindled, as did the updates, and then the forums were moved.

I'd love to be proved wrong, but I fear ripit has been abandoned again, which is a shame as it's the best there is. It's only a matter of time before it will be unable to handle the newer releases.

Ok well I have owned it a very short time. I will be asking for a full refund. I hope that is possible.

I've never heard of a software company giving a refund for a purchase with the exception of a reseller for an unopened shrink-wrap package. For download purchases, once you have your license key, all sales are final.

I have.

If TLAF does not want to refund software which by its nature needs to be kept up to date, then they need to dedicate resource to the situation.

It's very simple.

FYI, Apple gives refunds for iOS/MAC apps as long as you can show the app does not do what it promised or is faulty.  Never understood the stance from users that if an application fails to perform as required or specified that you have to simply sit back and take it.  It's like buying anything, if your unhappy look into the legal means needed to find a solution.

Maybe TLAF shouldn't post on their website that it is
'guaranteed to work' and has a '99.9999% success rate'.  As well as dropping the line that it is 'continuously updated to rip the latest releases'.  All of which may have been in fact true a year ago or whatever but like others here I too continue to run into problem DVD's that I can resolve in other applications but not with RipIt.

True Grit gave me issues as well as No Strings Attached too but my Windows copy of DVDFab worked like a champ.

TLAF wrote me noting that they would have a developer visit this googlegroup to update everyone on their efforts.

Good.

I don't want a refund IF the product will be updated on a timely, ongoing basis as they claim on their site.   Of course I have not been offered one either...

Everything being said here is, in my experience, unfortunately true.
RipIt used to be a well-supported product, but they dumped that level
of support just prior to dumping these forums from their site. They
clearly moved the forums here so they *wouldn't* have to deal with
their customers who were getting pretty vocal about the degrading
support -- and more importantly, so that no potential customers would
see the complaints on their site.

You'll notice that nobody's monitoring these groups.

RipIt is a dead product. If you have not purchased RipIt already, do
not buy it.

In all fairness, I do my ripping in Windows and compressing with RipIt (for continuity). With only two commercial ripping programs on the Mac (that are well known) this one has gotten the most praise, making it a LEGAL target. There are lots of things to factor in to the massive delay. Including Lion, Xcode 4, updates to HandBrake (since they use it as an encoding engine for compressing). I say we wait to hear from Scott or another dev before we all make false decisions.

Here here...as with all things the answer is rarely black and
white..and still for what ever it is worth it is still one of the
simplest programs to use.
just my two cents :)

Hey guys,

Jane from TLAF support here. I've asked Scott to drop by and let you know what we are working on at the moment, but in the meantime I'd like to address some of the concerns raised here and, hopefully, assuage some fears.

Firstly, we *are* still actively supporting and updating RipIt. We are A little bit behind on updates at the moment but are currently working on a bunch of DVD fixes, including 'True Grit' and 'No Strings Attached'. On that note, please note that the dates on the release notes for the last few updates are incorrect - the last update was released in February this year, and not 2010. Apologies for the confusion.

Regarding the support forums, we made the decision to close them because they simply became too big for us to handle and we did not have the resources to devote adequate attention to them. This group was set up as an alternative avenue for customers to interact with each other, and for us to let you know about updates and other developments. We monitor this group but it is *not* intended as a support forum. If you have questions or concerns which require a direct response from us please send these to our support team. We usually respond to support requests within 24 hours.

As always, thank you for your ongoing support and constructive feedback.

Jane

I think that everyone should take a step back and give the staff at
ripit a chance to do their thing. I have been a owner of the program
since close to the original release and have found that given a little
time the programmers have always come through. If you are a Mac user,
ripit is still the best ripper. Mactheripper is good but hard to find
and acquire. The fixes that are required to keep up with constantly
changing disks are not always easy to figure out and take time. We all
need to give them time to find the answers, so far they have never let
me down! Keep up the good work!

I hope so. I have little personal history here. All I know is that I purchased this product and now a significant percentage of movies I'd like to rip and burn, cannot be. I just returned Battle L.A. and Resident Evil Afterlife plus a third movie. The first two I could rip but not burn so that it would play on my DVD player. Many older discs rip and burn just fine using Ripit and DVD2One or Toast.

Perhaps in the past support was more timely. Presently TLAF gets back to you quickly but no refund seems to be possible. A developer was asked to update this group around a week ago, perhaps he or she took a long holiday weekend vacation I dunno.

It is not very confidence inspiring.

I also got a notice from Google (right after my emails to support) that this Ripit Group won't be available after some date this coming August. I am not sure if the whole group is being shut down or just older or selected things. Maybe that is a coincidence or unrelated.

I hope that things improve, and soon.

Stan----I found that when I tried to rip drive angry and burn with toast9 or dvd2one no luck. I tried again but this time I used a duel layer dvd-r and bingo a good copy? Go figure!

Thanks I will try that out.   There are quite a few recent DVDs with some quirks it appears.

At what speed can you burn in general?   Onto single layer blanks I seem to be able to hit in the 5-7X range on my MBP.   Dunno if that is decent or not.

In the case there is a playback issue on a regular DVD player, could that speed be an issue…as in would a slower burn help?   I've guessed that a too fast burn would mostly lead to potential stutters or freezes.

What do you think?

I do not watch my speed as I usually start the burn and walk away. I have had no issues with playback although I am running a blue ray player. The playback on my dvd player is normal and my burning speed seems to have little effect on playback.

I've been using RipIt for well over a year and I've recommended it to
so many people. I really do hope they don't abandon it and start
pushing updates out to handle the newer releases. On the
recommendation here, I'll have to try out MDRP and I also have DVDFab
(on Windows) which is really good and is constantly updated, but I'm
trying to move away from having to use Windows.

Jane - TLAF said that Scott would be dropping by and providing an
update on what was in the works. That was almost three weeks ago so
what happened? I appreciate that a release is coming out, but part of
good customer service is being reliable so that your customers will
stick with you and buy other products. Since this thread was
concerning the lack of updates and communication from TLAF I'm
disappointed that the response that was mentioned didn't happen.

Again, I'm happy to see a release come out, but if the release is just
a fix for a couple of discs after all this time it's going to be to
little to late at this point. There is a great community of Mac
developers who create great products and care about their customers.
This product was one of those before it was bought by TLAF. If TLAF
doesn't turn things around I will highly recommend other products to
everyone I know. Customer services is just as important as the product
that is delivered.

BTW... you guys might not want to go to the App store because Apple
will force refunds if your product doesn't do everything that is
promised. If you do you might want to remove the 99.9999% number from
the website.

Over the weekend I was able to partially rip a backup of The Tourist in that it was unburnable via Toast or Burn or DVD2oneX2. This is more and more common with many discs these days. I've run into 6 or 7 similar situations in my brief time as a paid up owner of RipIt. Some of these titles have been out for some time, but the larger percentage of my sample are more recent discs. Sometimes you can rip and burn. Sometimes rip and watch a title only on the computer with no backup possible. And sometimes you cannot seem to get a rip.

I hope that the upcoming RipIt revision has more success with such titles.
