Hi!
Im new to the Edge Series, I was always using Fenix and Forerunner watches before.
If I did a bike ride, it was labeled as "Radfahren" (bike ride) like the higher category. On the edge, I have to choose between the ride types:
"Road" "Commuting" "Mountain" "Gravel" "Cyclocross" "Indoor" "eBike" "eMountain". None of this fits to my bike or my rides.
I would prefer to get the old label or, to say it better, the higher category. It even doesn't mirror the labels in Garmin Connect online.

Each profile has different settings which are relevant to the names they are given. "Indoor" has the GPS off. "Road" will navigate via roads instead of off road trails. "Mountain" will have the mountain bike specific features turned on.

You're free to create your own profiles, delete existing profiles, and copy/edit/rename any existing profiles. The simplest thing to do is identify an existing profile that's closest to what you want, copy it, name it, and edit the copy (data screens, number and type of data fields, routing preferences, maps, automatic features, etc...) to be exactly what you want, then, if you want, delete the original. All of the profiles on my Edge are ones I created/edited to be exactly what I want for the different types of riding I do.

In Garmin connect, any cycling category will be included under the general Cycling category. When looking at the activities list, you can select Cycling and all cycling categories will be included in the list. You can also then select the specific category to see only that category listed. The same goes for doing summary reports.

So, irrespective of what category of cycling it's identified as on the Edge, it will always show up under the general Cycling Category on GC. And, as already mentioned, you can change the category of an activity on GC and move it from one of the sub-categories of cycling to the general Cycling category.

That said, AFAIK, you can't have an activity on the Edge not be automatically categorized as one of the sub categories of Cycling, which seems to be what you're looking for. However, since you don't care about sub categories, whichever sub category yours are identified as, they will still always be listed on the general Cycling category in GC.

My primary question here is related to Routing > Activity, and how chances here will impact the Trip Computer. Using the same profile, but changing the Activity between Automobile Driving and Motorcycle Driving has a big impact on ETA and "Time to" Next or Destination. It appeared to me that the change in values was almost 2:1, with Automobile Driving at approximately half the travel time of Motorcycling. I'm not sure what kinds of motorcycles (ahem, scooters) Garmin has in mind, but the typical highway going motorcycle is at least as fast as cars (I'll admit to being somewhat faster, due to easy passing and fun times). Where can I find out what and how Activity affects the GPA (Montana 750i in my case)?

1. Rename Activity to avoid confusion with Activity Type. Since Activity Type is a well known setting under Recording and Tracks, perhaps Activity, under Routing, should be renamed Transportation Mode, or some similar alternative.

3. Move Activity to a sub-menu, Activity Setup (a.k.a. Transportation Mode Setup). Of course Activity (or Transportation Mode) has an impact on Routing--we wouldn't want to route pedestrians on a freeway--but it may not be so obvious that the Trip Computer is affected. (I would have expected the Activity Type under Recording, would affects the computer, and spent more time there trying to diagnose my problem). On the setup menu, the first item would be Activity (or Transportation Mode), and the following items would make it plainly clear how this impacts the system. For example:

5. Add Computer Settings to the Trip Computer bottom right menu. Display the activity, speed adjustment, automatic variables (see #6) and whatever else, the computer is using for calculations.

6. Add some automatic learning to the trip computer. If the driver is averaging 5% less than the posted speed limit, ETA and Time to should reflect this across the entire route, rather than have those values slowly creep towards a more accurate estimate as you approach your destination (this currently works too much like a weather forecast).

7. Add other types of driving. RV's and travel trailers should not be presented with the same ETA and Time to in the Trip Computer. Same goes for most of my adventure bike riding buddies!

Have you had any success with this. I have noticed that same problem and have narrowed it down specifically to the "Motorcycle Driving Activity" but have not been able to figure out where the problem is. It is NOT related to avoidances, that much I know but cannot figure out what settings are messed up. So far at GPSrChive I have not heard anything useful. I thought that maybe it was user error but now I don't think so. Glad at least one other person has noticed exactly that same thing I am seeing. I would appreciate knowing anything you may have found out.

Unfortunately no luck at all. it's still broken IMHO, and I have to try to remember all the little nuances of how it operates: not so hard when you use it daily, but my lack of currency over winter will make this a challenge.

Thanks for posting about this. It's not possible to set a default privacy setting for activities, based on activity type. A workaround you could consider would be to change your default settings so all activities sync into your account visible only to you. You can then edit the visibility settings of only the ones you want to share with others.

I appreciate this, but this seems like a really big privacy miss. A lot of users want to share specific sport activities to Strava by default, but then every other activity gets logged as well. For instance, my bike rides I want shared automatically so my team can keep up with me, etc - but I don't want my cardio or strength training shared to everyone because that shows everyone that I'm probably home.

I have done this but just realised these activities show on my profile page to followers, I don't want this to happen. My followers should only be able to see activities on my profile page that are set to everyone or followers. I do not want followers to see my weights etc which is why I chose "only you" Followers being able to see I have done these activites (even though they cant see detail) makes a mockery of the "only you" setting.

Thank for mentioning this. Activities that are set to "only you" will not be visible to anyone (including your Followers) on your profile page. If that seems to be happening, could you double check those activities and ensure they are set to "only you".

I would try setting logbook type to M20P and see if that works. The fact that you got an error message with the letter truncated might indicate that it checks both. Also, it is a good idea to completely shut down the tablet and do a cold reboot from time to time. That sometimes fixes weird problems.

I have recently brought a Garmin Oregon 450. It can, as well as the Dakota, Etrex 20/30, Montana and some other Garmin models display a geo referenced KMZ map. I have been using OSM img file maps which work great but are usually be a few weeks old. I think it could be useful to be able to get an up to date map of a small area for use while surveying. The method explained here is awkward:- is there an easier way, as our data is already calibrated I hope there is. Thanks

If you can find out of copyright Ordnance Survey maps it is a bit easier the calibrate them with this OS grid over lay on Google Earth. see links. -copyright-ordnance-survey-maps-be-made-available-online

The above out of copyright maps link does not work now, but this OS opendata and OSM hybrid may be useful. Note I seems that early in day the data is copyrighted OS data but after a limit is reached it switches over to OS open data and openstreetmap hybrid. -hug.net/

Note if downloading tiles from openstreetmap.org, you should ensure you follow the Tile usage policy. As that says, bulk downloading is strongly discouraged. So downloading tiles for a small village or suburb at zoom 14 or 15 is probably OK. But don't download a large area at high zoom level. Otherwise, you will probably get blocked.

Also note the Garmin Custom Maps are a bitmap format. This has some disadvantages, eg it only looks good at a particular zoom level. And text may not be very readable on a small screen. Also it doesn't support any routing or searching. So you may be better using a regular Garmin IMG map, generating an up to date version as in Vincent's answer.

It took me a, PC amateur, an hour or so to install Mobac, update java and create my first and perfectly aligned KMZ. more to learn yet. Thanks. I did create some KMZs the Google Earth way and I did get quite good results by having a GPX on the image and also loading the same GPX which I used to align the 1200X800 screen snipped jpeg. It was clear and did not pixelate and also perfectly aligned on the Oregon. sad that way is so awkward. Ideally Basecamp would have jpeg alignment feature. Thanks again.

For completeness two hints:
There is the jnx format (Garmin Birdseye) with which you can cover much bigger areas then you could with kmz files. A really helpful site for this topic you find here.

A lot of precompiled OSM based vector maps are updated weekly or more often. garmin.openstreetmap.nl isn't mentioned there and (iirc) updates twice a week. There you can like with the bbbike extract service, updated weekly download garmin vector maps for self defined areas.
