The International Training Workshop on Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction is  tentatively scheduled to be held from 27th to 30th April 2011 at Avillion Legacy Melaka,  Malaysia.

 

The International Training Workshop will provide an opportunity to young people to discuss and understand climate change and the need for risk reduction and adaptation is perhaps the most important issue facing the human race and life on this planet. The International Training will also reflect on how can youth best work towards a sustainable and disaster risk free future? How can youth assist vulnerable communities to reduce the impact of natural and human-induced hazards? How can networks be forged among youth from different nationalities across the globe to bring about positive change? How can development and the environment be reconciled? These are some of the issues that will be highlighted at the workshop

 

 

The objectives of this International Training Workshop are:

 

1.       Through Lectures, interactive sessions and the exploration of case studies participants will develop a high level understanding of:

 

·         Current disaster and climate change issues and how impacts can be overcome through adaptation and disaster risk reduction 

·         The governance and policy landscape for adaptation and disaster risk  reduction

·         The important role for youth in driving change

 

2.       Enable peer-to-peer learning and allow participants to explore issues from their local context with international colleagues

 

3.       Build new networks and develop youth based adaptation and risk reduction initiatives

 

Application Criteria:

 

  • Young people between the ages of 18 – 30 (however some flexibility will be exercised as the definition of youth varies from country to country)
  • Youth representatives from various national youth organizations, institutions of higher learning, civil society organizations, related government agencies/ministries, young representatives of environmental groups including those working in institutions promoting climate change adaptation and green energy, think tanks or those in accomplishments like education, media and arts.
  • Have a good understanding of the theme and the relevant policies in their respective countries
  • Proficient in English and able to do presentations in English, is a must
  • Possess good communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to solve problems through adaptability and flexibility.
  • Motivated to improve the lives of others through their actions and work.
  • Capable and willing to share experiences and resources with others in the community and contribute to the “International Training” follow-up process.
  • Willing and being able to participate actively for the whole duration of the project
  • Must be able to execute a follow-up within 6 months of the Training in the respective organizations/community etc
  • Geographical and gender balance will be respected

Pre-workshop Preparation:

Successful applicants will be expected to collect and bring to the workshop key information about their local context and climate change/disaster situation. This will be utilized in the workshop exercises and to help develop do-able regional or local collaborative project proposals that can be followed up after completion of the workshop.

 

 

Air Travel Subsidy:

The Foundation regrets to inform you that there are no funds available for air travel subsidy. Hence participants are required to fund their own air-travel. The Foundation will provide accommodation, meals and local hospitality for the duration of the Training.

 

Application Submission:

The deadline for application is 30th March 2011. Email submissions are preferred. If email is not an option, please  fax to World Youth Foundation (Fax No: +606-2323911) or mail to World Youth Foundation at P.O. Box 584, 75760 Melaka, Malaysia. Early applications are encouraged to ensure the timely processing  of travel documents and arrangements.

 

Upon receiving of the application forms a Selection Committee will review all the applications and select the most deserving participant. A letter of confirmation will then be sent to successful participants with the necessary information. You can use this letter to apply your visa.  The Selection Committee’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entertained.
