Older versions of Windows needed the CRC in order to grok Canon's RAW formats. But that is no longer the case: Microsoft now has its own codec pack that includes Canon RAW. For Windows 7, you may need to download it (John Hoffman's note shows you how); in Windows 8 and 10 it's included with the OS.
So recently upgraded from 70D to 6D mark II and the windows 10 raw preview in windows 10 explorer doesn't seem to be working? This camera came out July 2017 how long does it usually take for a codec to be released? I have done my fair share of of googling of the issue but there doesn't seem to be any solution other than continuing to shoot raw + jpeg
I had the same problem, and finally found a solution. There is a free raw codec from Microsoft available now which works fine for my 6D MkII. It previews .cr2 files in Windows Explorer. You can find it here:
Since .CR2 is a proprietary RAW file format exclusive to Canon, I wouldn't expect Windows Photos or Explorer to display files in this format natively. There are 3rd party programs that will also display RAW images, and if intalled, could allow a native windows program to display them, but I wouldn't wait to see if Microsoft is going to support .CR2 file format when so many better alternatives exist.
I'm not looking to add another program when I have lightroom available to me. I just want to be able to see my images at a glance when they are in their RAW format via windows explorer as this was possible with all other camera's I have owned in the past. Windows has previously supported RAW for quite some time with their codec packs yet the 6D mark II is singled out.

I understand what you are looking for. That codec pack is about 4 yrs old. Maybew MS will update it to include .CR2 at some point. I happy to use DPP or LR, so not being able to view RAW .CR2 images in Explorer is not a big deal to me.
The RAW file is specific to the sensor... which is why every new camera model needs a different codec. There are many general things that are common to all RAW files. For example, they all have an embedded JPEG preview image.
I'm not sure what the story is with Windows. I use a mac and Apple is pretty good about regularly updating the codecs. The last update came about 6 weeks ago. I did some digging on the Windows side... and the most recent update I can find for Windows 10 is from.... 2014??? Can that be right?
My issue is that in windows 10 the raw files do not generate a preview in the Windows explorer. I donloaded drivers which allow me to view the files in Adobe Bridge/Lightroom but I still cannot see previews.
Your link is correct. Thats the one I thougt I was linking too. Use Peter's link, The RAW image extension app used in conjunction with windows build 1903 offers native .cr3 support in windows explorer.
I mean, you could tell us what programs you've tried using? Davince Resolve? Premier Pro? After Effects? You can't just double click a file and expect it to play without the correct software or HEVC H.265 codecs.
I just loaded up a C-Log 3 video file from my Canon R6 into Movie Edit Pro Premium 2021, and it could not read it, I had to purchase the latest HEVC codec, which I did so. Then MEP Premium imported my file ok. But, unfortunately the video clips all appear badly corrupted in MEP Premium, and unusable. In an external viewer they play perfectly well (I use MVP in Windows 10).

I recently purchased a Canon 5D mark IV. I uploaded some RAW images today to my computer for the first time and was a bit bewildered when Lightroom could not open the files. A quick google search informs me that it's something to do with the codec for images on Windows or something (I don't quite understand it all).
Apple ProRes is a high-quality codec and is widely-used as an acquisition, production and delivery format. Adobe has collaborated with Apple to provide editors, artists, and post-production professionals with comprehensive ProRes workflows for Premiere Pro and After Effects. Support for ProRes on macOS and Windows streamlines video production and simplifies final output, including server-based remote rendering with Adobe Media Encoder.
The media formats listed here are supported for directly importing and editing with Premiere Pro. The required codecs are built in to Premiere Pro, and supported on both Mac OS and Windows systems unless stated otherwise.
I was just exchanging emails with the folks at AVID and they said that the Canon HEVC .265 codec is not a supported fornmat for Media Composer . However, a feature request has already been created to support this format in future versions of MC.
Thanks Steve. It just worked! I have XP. I had to restart the computer. I was working with Ps7. I didn't know that I wasn't going to be able to see .psd thumbnails so I deleted it. I had several folders with .psd files only and I couldn't see what they were anymore. This helped a lot because I couldn't reinstall Ps7. I was getting error messages. I could see them in Bridge... but I couldn't see pictures samples of image files that were inside folders.
The only problem that I have now is that the other image files would not open on CS4 when I click on them. They open with windows picture and fax viewer. I tried to change that going to the image properties and adding Ps to the list of programs but it doesn't do it. The only way they open is searching for them in Ps. They won't open with Bridge either.

Once you install the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack you will have thumbnail previews, and you will be able to open in Microsoft Photo Viewer (just like a jpeg) simply by double clicking. This codec pack will quickly allow you to find the photos/shots that you want to edit. *See below for direct download link.

The Canon RAW codec is software specially designed for users of Canon digital cameras who regularly shoot in RAW. It adds support for Microsoft Windows Imaging Component (WPIC) programs which enables Windows to import those images without additional plug-ins or software. This software is compatible only with Canon digital cameras. For other camera brands, it is not compatible.
Microsoft supplies the free Windows Camera Codec Pack for Windows XP and later versions of Microsoft Windows, to integrate raw file viewing and printing into some Microsoft Windows tools.[45] The codecs allow native viewing of raw files from a variety of specific cameras in Windows Explorer / File Explorer and Windows Live Photo Gallery / Windows Photo Gallery, in Windows Vista and Windows 7.[46] As of October 2016, Microsoft had not released an updated version since April 2014, which supported some specific cameras by the following manufacturers: Canon, Casio, Epson, Fujifilm, Kodak, Konica Minolta, Leica, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, Samsung, and Sony. For windows 10 this was essentially replaced in 2019 by Microsoft Raw Image Extension.[46]
Microsoft Windows supports the Windows Imaging Component (WIC) codec standard. WIC was available as a stand-alone downloadable program for Windows XP Service Pack 2, and built into Windows XP Service Pack 3, Windows Vista, and later versions. Windows Explorer / File Explorer, and Windows Live Photo Gallery / Windows Photo Gallery can view raw formats for which the necessary WIC codecs are installed. Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus and Pentax have released WIC codecs for their cameras, although some manufactures only provide codec support for the 32-bit versions of Microsoft Windows.[48]
