Thisis a close one for me. I love what both of these guys do and guys with jazz influence like Skolnick are way too rare nowadays. I got to give it Marty for his phrasing though...by a very small margin.
Marty's short work with Mave blows anything Alex has done...BUT i think Alex is a MUCH better player than Marty as evidenced by any of Marty's solo work before and after Mave. Alex is a monster player. Alex's solos to my ears have nothing signature about them, just a great player shredding but the vibrato, the note selection...all kinda seem pedestrian to me.
Anyone who can possibly confuse someone who plays as uniquely as marty friedman with anyone else, but somehow "KNOWS" when it's a jazz influenced influenced player and exactly who he is, is quite frankly full of shit.
For real; aside from Eric Johnson and a few other guys, there are very few guitarists with styles as instantly recognizable as Friedman. I'd hardly call him generic. Skolnick on the other hand, well he's definitely a capable player but he just sounds like a generic shredder type to me.
For one, unlike some random ass previous post, you are very unlikely to hear another guitarist who sounds like Marty Friedman. His wide use of pre-bends, vibrato, phrasing, legato, etc.. are all insanely unique and always sound very musical regardless of tempo.
Every single guitar solo that Marty Friedman has written is incredible, sure some aren't exactly AS good as others but they're all incredible because it's all refreshing after listening to the same old shred in every band.
tough censoredin choice. I :love:LOVE:love: both bands, but dont know if I could pick a winner here. I voted Friedman, but after the fact I thought bout it and think both are pretty damn impressive. They each do what they do well
Skolnick just does the typical "sounds impressive" but theres hardly any real substance to his solos. Just look at the solo in Apocalyptic City, It sounded so rad when I was a kid but now it just sounds like some excercise run that kids learn when they want to show off. Martys stuff is way more unique and exotic sounding. Its riskier and just sounds more interesting. Marty adds a unique flavor to all that shred type of stuff. Instantly recognizable even on songs I never heard before. Also Megadeth's music is a better vehicle for creativity than the thrash by numbers stuff that Testament put(s) out.
if you want a cleanly played solo, listen to Skolnick in "Souls of Black". that was the first solo i heard that made me say "OH censored! i HAVE to know how to play that!!!" i learned it, but have long since forgotten it. that cd is 18 years old.
