The DC animated multiverse is vast, and the films aren't afraid to stray from the classic tales of heroes who save the day. Sometimes the villains win, or a good plan goes south. When these things happen, DC's animated films get dark. Not only do worlds end up destroyed, but the resulting casualties can be brutal, which causes even the best of heroes to lose faith in their cause.

The Suicide Squad is a criminal-class team that has been in the spotlight since the premieres of both their live-action films. They're given the chance to shine in animated form as well, due to Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay being just as gritty and dark as the characters it contains. In this story, the team of incarcerated villains is employed by Amanda Waller to retrieve a mystical object.

In a story that DC fans can't seem to get enough of, Superman loses sight of what it means to be a hero in Injustice. The film tells the story of an alternate world where the Joker tricks Superman into accidentally killing Lois Lane and the repercussions that follow. While Superman going evil isn't a new concept in the comics, it's something else to watch one of the franchise's greatest heroes fall in animated form.

Unfortunately, The Killing Joke is a story where the hero isn't quick enough. The film features a well-known turning point for the character Barbara Gordon, where the Joker manages to shoot and paralyze her from the waist down. This is just the beginning of the Joker's plans, however, and the story darkly continues from there.

Justice League Dark: Apokolips War is an incredible and highly recommended animated comic book adaptation, which serves as an epic and memorable conclusion to the DC Animated Movie Universe. I had an exceptional time watching this movie, especially as it blended a dark and clever story with amazing characters, impressive animation and a top-notch team of voice actors. This was an overall great film, and it might be one of the best new movies of 2020 so far (which to be fair, might be due to most films getting pushed back this year). I had a great time reviewing this animated film, and I might spend a bit of time reviewing more animated comic book movies in the future. As most of them are adaptions of existing comic books, I think this is close enough to my current focus as a reviewer to fit on this blog, and I look forward to examining some of my favourite animated comic book movies in the future.
