As a Ph.D. student, Maria continues her research on the intersection of communications and branding in the sports industry. She is also interested in athletes' activism and sports organizations' corporate social advocacy and how it affects public attitudes towards various social issues. In her research, Maria is inspired by the idea that, although sport is often perceived as simple entertainment, it reflects the conditions of society with tremendous accuracy, hence is vital to study.

The trajectory of sports gambling in Florida has been marked by a series of legal battles, legislative maneuvers, and operational challenges. Since the overturning of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in May 2018, Florida has been embroiled in debates and legal proceedings surrounding the expansion of sports betting within the state.[1] This journey began with the passage of Amendment 3 by Florida voters later in 2018, requiring any gambling expansions to receive approval through a statewide ballot initiative.[2] Despite this mandate, Governor Ron DeSantis signed a new, 30-year tribal compact with the Seminole Tribe in May 2021, allowing the tribe to hold gambling activities, including sports betting, on their lands.[3] Under the terms of this compact, the Seminole Tribe was mandated to pay $500 million annually to keep its license.[4] This essentially gave the Seminole Tribe a 30-year monopoly over the sports gambling industry in Florida.[5] This move set the stage for a complex legal landscape as various stakeholders grappled with the implications of the compact and its conformity with state and federal laws.

Despite setbacks, the landscape shifted again in June 2023 when the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit reversed a lower-court judgment, and offered a glimmer of hope for the future of sports betting in Florida.[9] Following this ruling, in November 2023, Hard Rock Bet relaunched its sports gambling app with exclusive access to existing customers who had created accounts during the original launch in 2021.[10]

A car accident at age five resulted in her being partially paralyzed, but her family did not let the accident derail her future. Her dad had her exercising and swimming daily after she returned home from the hospital.

Maria was not enthusiastic about her daily regimen, until she became inspired watching the Dallas Cowboys training under the hot California sun near her home. She and her three older brothers were very into sports and she realized that if the Cowboys could do that, she could endure a hard daily workout too.

Working with a trainer on adaptive exercises that could be done sitting down led her to create her own cable show and videos for those with limited mobility. The videos featured professional athletes, whom she personally recruited, sharing their stories of recovery from sports injuries. She then began to tour the county as the National Spokeswoman for a brand of fitness equipment. All this after a doctor had expressed doubts that someone sitting down in a wheelchair could be active enough to achieve a healthy weight.

For three years, she balanced multiple jobs to find her footing in sports media. She was a radio anchor, a show host, an analyst and on-air talent. She reported for radio companies with broad reach, such as SiriusXM and NBC Sports Radio, and hyper-local ones, including WGHT Radio in Pompton Lakes.

There were days Marino, a North Jersey native, ran from one gig to the next, and then on to another. And there were nights when she would leave her office in midtown Manhattan at 1 a.m. Sometimes, she would sprint to catch the last bus or train to avoid an expensive Uber ride home.

The hard times eventually paid off. After years of hustle, in 2018 SportsNet New York, better known as SNY, called to say she would make her debut on the network. Alone in her apartment, Marino jumped up and cheered.

A few years into her career she realized she wanted to cover sports full time. While at WGHT Radio, Marino joined two of her high school buddies on their sports podcast. She realized she loved to talk sports. At first it was a hobby. Then, she began consuming sports headlines insatiably.

Text description provided by the architects. This project articulates a brief for an R&D sports technology centre focused on nature-related activities. The site is located on a peninsula in the Gabriel y Galn Reservoir in Cceres Province, with seasonal changes in the water level.

The building's location is therefore set on a safe level. The roughly 6,000 m2 programme is stretched to produce a 630 m circular structure, ensuring that the building is always only partly visible. In other words, a fragment insinuates the entire building, although the only way to really appreciate the whole structure is from the air. This big-scale dilutes the project into its surroundings. The building also becomes an artifact that seems alien to its location, materialized by means of a dry construction system with assembled components, integrated with the landscape by contrast.

The structure rises off the ground without changing the topography, thus reducing its impact on the site. Contact points are minimised by defining a single raised level which creates a complex, varied spatial relationship with the immediate topography.

Maria co-founded a non-profit organization in 2015 called Winning Edge Leadership Academy. The mission of the Winning Edge is to educate, foster professional mentoring relationships and

provide networking opportunities and enrichment scholarships to ethnic minorities and women who are seeking careers in the sports industry. Since 2015, the academy has helped more than 40 students to become the next generation of leaders in sports business.

Maria attended UGA, where she played collegiate volleyball and basketball. She was named to the All-SEC volleyball team three times and was also a member of the USA A2 National Volleyball team. She graduated from Georgia in 2009 with a degree in broadcast news. She returned to the university and earned an MBA in 2013. She is a native of Alpharetta.

Marino earned her B.A. in Communications with a journalism concentration and Spanish minor from Ramapo College in 2011. She has always been a strong writer, she says, but her interviewing skills, love of the game, and confidence in front of a camera has helped propel her career in the exciting world of sports television.
