to Rincon Hill
Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Hope you had a wonderful 4th of July weekend. I visited Vancouver for
the first time. Did you know the Rincon Hill Plan Area is based upon
the waterfront high-rise towers and livability characteristics of
Vancouver? Yes indeed - Vancouver offers a preview of what was
envisioned for Rincon Hill once our neighborhood is fully developed.

In regards to development, I watched last Thursday's Planning
Commission meeting and saw that the 399 Fremont Street project got
their one year renewal. They are still pursuing the Green Development
Agreement legislation, but they may start planting flowers in the
meanwhile (though I don't believe the Planning Commission got any sort
of guarantee that would happen as a condition for their renewal, so
don't hold your breath - often, developers will talk about fluffy,
pretty stuff to help get their Planning approvals and then not spend a
nickel actually implementing the fluffy, pretty stuff if they don't
have to). As an aside, kudos to Turnberry Lansing's 45 Lansing Street
project for fixing up their lot without any sort of government
legislation guaranteeing their entitlement - they are doing it to
build goodwill in the Rincon Hill neighborhood, and that's the right
way to go in my personal opinion. The other Rincon Hill neighborhood
project (562-564 Howard Street, proposal to build another 11 stories
on top of an existing 2-story building) on the July 1st Agenda was
rescheduled to July 22nd. There is also a cannabis (pot, marijuana,
whatever) dispensary looking for approval from the Planning
Commission, also on the July 22nd schedule I do believe. You can check
agendas on the Monday prior to the Thursday Planning Commission
meeting at http://www.sfplanning.org Nearby, the Cityplace shopping
mall project is on today's Planning Commission agenda - they want 188
parking spots, and that's the big disagreement between folks who live/
work downtown and the Cityplace developer. Tune into Channel 26 if
you're bored and want to hear the bellyaching extravaganza! <grin>

This Saturday, please join neighbors at the Bryant and Beale Street
dog park for a "Second Saturday Volunteer Clean Up and Dog Romp." From
9am until 11:30am on Saturday July 10th, the gates will be open and
you and your well-behaved dog are invited! Come help pick up trash,
pull weeds, and otherwise help keep the site in good shape OR just
come to socialize with neighbors OR give your dog(s) a chance to run
around off leash and play with other neighborhood dogs. Don't be shy
- come join us! Totally fun and worthwhile. Also, please join the
Facebook page for the dog park by visiting http://www.Facebook.com/RinconHillDogPark
and clicking the "Like" button.

CHINATOWN YMCA SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR YOUTH MENTORING
Vicky Lee, the Building Futures Program Coordinator for the Chinatown
YMCA and one of our neighbors, asked me to announce a volunteer
opportunity that will do your soul some good. It is an opportunity to
help mentor kids who live downtown, in Chinatown, or North Beach who
may not have the same opportunities a lot of us lucky folks had while
we were growing up. According to Vicky, " Most of our mentors work
and/or downtown, and all of them work full-time, so this is definitely
a feasible volunteer opportunity that doesn't require a huge amount of
time. Since all of the youth also live downtown, there is little to
no driving involved." To learn more, please contact Vicky at
415-886-7553 or by email at vl...@ymcasf.org right away - the next
training for mentors starts on July 13th (but do get in touch whether
this timing works or if you will need to catch the next training
date).

While the Rincon Hill Neighborhood Association meetings are on hiatus,
I always encourage you to attend the upcoming South Beach/Rincon/
Mission Bay Neighborhood Association meetings. The next meeting is
Monday, July 12th from 6pm until 7pm at the South Beach Harbor
Services Building's Community Room (located between Pier 40 and AT&T
Park on The Embarcadero). Guest speak John Funghi from the San
Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority will provide an overview
and update of the Central Subway project that will extend the T-Third
MUNI Metro line from 4th and King Streets up 4th Street with stops at
Moscone, Powell, and into the heart of Chinatown. Get an overview at
http://www.sfmta.com/cms/mcsp/cspover.htm Hope to see you there!

UPCOMING FUN EVENTS

Friday, July 9th from 8pm - 11pm, the opening night party for the
Yerba Buena Center for the Arts new TechnoCRAFT exhibits features
cocktails by Campari, Speakeasy Ales & Lagers, and rock-and-roll from
local band Scissors for Lefty. YBCA members and guest get in FREE,
$15 at the door for non-members. Learn more at http://www.ybca.org
As an aside, my favorite online t-shirt source, http://www.Threadless.com
, is going to be at Pier 15 today (July 8th) and at this YBCA event
tomorrow evening (learn more at http://www.threadless.com/tour ).

Sunday Streets in the Mission this Sunday, July 11th from 10am until
3pm - Hands down the most fun location of the bunch (sorry
Embarcadero) because the streets have residents who enjoy throwing a
party in front of their porches with the Sunday Streets attendees. It
was a bit crowded last month for bicyclists along the 24th Street
portion of the route, but Harrison Street offers a pretty wide open
space for bike riding. THEY NEED VOLUNTEERS - please check out their
website at http://www.SundayStreetsSF.com to get more information
about the event and to sign up as a volunteer for this or future
Sunday Streets events. Come out and play!!

Get your french on Wednesday, July 14th from 5pm until Midnight or so
for the annual Bastille Day Block Party just off of Bush Street
between Grant and Kearny. I've never attended, but it sounds
interesting if you enjoy booze. Learn more at http://www.theirishbank.com
