Greetings Neighbors and Friends,

Join Open Space Advocates at the Neighborhood Parks Council
Friendraiser Luncheon!

On Friday, May 21st, from Noon until 1pm at the Sailors' Union of the
Pacific building located at the corner of 1st and Harrison Streets,
the Neighborhood Parks Council is holding its annual Friendraiser
Luncheon. You may attend without cost. It is a fundraiser for the
Neighborhood Parks Council (NPC). From the NPC website, "The NPC
Friendraiser Luncheon introduces new business and civic leaders to NPC
and informs them about our mission to make parks cleaner, safer and
more enjoyable." Anybody who wants to work together with other Rincon
Hill neighbors to get at least one open green space park in our
redeveloping neighborhood should become a friend of NPC. I hope to
see you there along with our good friend (and founder of NPC) Isabel
Wade! Learn more at http://www.sfnpc.org/2010Luncheon

Speaking of parks, please be sure to send a letter asking Assemblyman
Tom Ammiano and State Senator Mark Leno to do whatever persuading they
can to help us get a part or all of a $5 million grant for the
Harrison Street Park. While I have been told by several folks that
we're wasting our time with Tom Ammiano because he could care less
about Rincon Hill even if we do not have ANY green open space
whatsoever, I think it is still worth the 20 seconds to send a message
to him. The issue is that there is a competing San Francisco
application from the Mission that he will no doubt get many more
emails from constituents to support - even though the Mission is
blessed with many green open spaces including Dolores Park already.
You see, until many, many more of us start taking ownership of our
neighborhood so that there are GREATER NUMBERS of calls to our
representatives in Sacramento to help us, they will continue to treat
us like second class citizens. What's more important ... being on time
for your dinner reservation or advocating for our first community park
where the 10 babies born in One Rincon Hill since it opened and
several other children can play outdoors with other neighborhood
kids? I hope I rile up some of you to take action. I did not move to
San Francisco only to be treated like a second class citizen because I
chose to live in an area of the City where I can walk to work.

Dump your eWaste to help SOMA youth!

Turn your trash into cash for San Francisco teen programs. The
Embarcadero YMCA and Green Mouse Recycling are hosting a fund raiser
on May 21st and 22nd. Bring your broken or obsolete monitors, TVs,
desktop computers, laptop computers, cell phones, telephones,
keyboards, mice, DVD/CD players, microwave ovens, batteries and other
eWaste down to the bin parked on the Steuart Street cul de sac.. Green
Mouse recycling will take your goods and donate back to the
Embarcadero YMCA Strong Communities Program. Youth Chance High
School, a program of the Embarcadero YMCA helps San Francisco teens
graduate from high school and move on with their adult lives. Your
broken printer could pay for a bus pass for a teen and put us just a
little closer to our goal of $200,000.

When: Friday May 21 from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Saturday May 22 from 9:00 am -3:00 pm
Where: 200 block of Steuart Street @ Howard

KFOG Kaboom - At Candlestick Park

Although most SoMa waterfront neighbors wish it was again held at
Piers 30/32 instead of Candlestick Park, I hope you'll make the trip
down the road to enjoy a concert headlined by Melissa Etheridge and
what promises to be another awesome fireworks show. Tickets, info:

Sunday Streets and the Bayview Music and Street Festival this Sunday

Sunday Streets comes to the Bayview neighborhood on Sunday, May 23rd
from 10am until 3pm, coinciding with the Bayview Music and Street
Festival that runs from 1pm until 5pm. Hopefully the weather will
cooperate and make this a great family event to attend ..... learn
more at http://sundaystreetssf.com/

Remember to register to vote before May 24th if you want to
participate in the June 8th Primary! Also, I encourage you to become
a permanent vote-by-mail voter when you do register.

By the way, did you know there's a Rincon Hill Branch of Wells Fargo
Bank? It is located at the corner of 2nd Street and Folsom Street.
They are open on Saturdays with little to no wait ... which leads to
the reason I mention it. They are debating whether or not they should
maintain open hours on Saturday because of the lack of traffic they
currently see. Other than folks who work out at their neighboring 24-
Hour Fitness, they don't see too many faces on Saturdays .... so, I'd
encourage you to start visiting them on Saturdays if you do use their
services.

There will not be a Rincon Hill Neighborhood Association meeting in
June, July, or August .... we're taking the summer off! However, you
are very welcome to join me at the South Beach/Rincon/Mission Bay
Neighborhood Association meetings on the 2nd Monday of each month from
6pm until 7pm at the South Beach Harbor Services Building's Community
Room. We have Jeff Adachi scheduled for a portion of the June 14th
meeting talking about his Smart Reform petition drive (see
http://sfsmartreform.com/ for more info).

Until next time .... follow us on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/RinconHill
and like us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/RinconHill
