My name is Joy McNeil and I am a senior attending John Brown University. I am majoring in Child and Family Studies and hoping to get my masters in Occupational Therapy after graduation. I am in the midst of my senior seminar research project, looking at the affect that Occupational Therapy has on families with children who have disabilities. I am interested in seeing if the family of the child undergoing Occupational Therapy experiences an increase in adaptability, cohesion, and functioning as a result of therapy.

I write this letter asking for your family's input into my study. The survey will require between 15 and 20 minutes and includes informed consent, a short demographic questionnaire and 2 FACES III (Family Adaptability and Cohesion Scale) assessments. The first FACES assessment will be taken from the perspective of the family before the child began
undergoing Occupational Therapy. The second assessment will be taken from the perspective of the family in its current state. In this way, I hope to receive a retrospective representation of the ways the family has changed since the child began Occupational Therapy.

The empirical results of my study will help therapists, parents and other helping professionals to see how the goals for Occupational Therapy are being reached. In turn, the study will help us evaluate how to make Occupational Therapy more affective at helping the child with disabilities by revealing if families are lacking support in creating a stable family system. My study has received IRB approval.
