Speaking of social media, I'm sure many of you have gotten into conversations with people who consider Dr. Google the health authority on all things nutritional. As we showed a couple of years ago in a piece here in Nutrition Today, the good doctor leaves much to be desired in these respects, and messages get clouded up by all the ads. This month our communications experts, Sylvia Rowe MA and Nick Alexander BA explore this tendency for people today to require a little more dialogue and a lot less pronouncements from on high from health professionals if they expect their advice to taken and followed. Their piece on explaining health and nutrition science to a doubtful public shows how a new approach is required, especially with evolving science where the evidence changes from one day to the next. I think of it as really striving to listen to the other person, which isn't easy to do, but is essential. There is more to it than that, though, and our authors show us how to try it.
