Kangourou sans Frontières (KSF) is an independent association, whose purpose is to organise the annual Kangaroo contest with the aim of promoting mathematics among young people around the world. Each year over six million school pupils aged 5 to 18 from more than 50 countries throughout the world take part at various levels. Awards are given to the top scoring students per grade at the national level. We decide to provide here a collections of past papers and solutions for those who wish to practice the math problems.
In addition to these resources, your students can test their mathematics and science knowledge to see how their answers compare to 4th and 8th grade students from countries around the world. By clicking on the icon above, students are provided the opportunity to test their knowledge of mathematics and science topics at their own convenience. The table below contains past papers and solutions, as well as general feedback on the admissions round for each year from 2010 onwards. Three averages are given for each year; $\mu_1$ is the average score of all Oxford applicants for Maths, Maths & Stats, and Maths & Philosophy, $\mu_2$ is the average score of those applicants who were shortlisted for interview, and $\mu_3$ is the average score of those applicants who were made offers. Similar statistics for Maths & Computer Science, Computer Science, and Computer Science & Philosophy applicants are available on the Computer Science departmental website.
The Notes for the past papers are intended for candidates using the past papers to prepare for MAT 2021. They mostly refer to syllabus changes. Note that there are 18 papers listed below, which is far more than we would expect any applicant to attempt.
The NAEP mathematics assessment measures students' knowledge and skills in five broad content areas of mathematics (Number properties and operations; Measurement; Geometry; Data analysis, statistics, and probability; and Algebra) and their ability to apply their content area knowledge to problem-solving situations. The NAEP mathematics framework guides the content and development of the mathematics assessment at grades 4, 8, and 12. The assessments at grades 4 and 8 measure all five content areas. The grade 12 assessment measures four content areas; because most measurement topics suitable for twelfth-grade students are geometric in nature, geometry and measurement are combined into one content area.
The samples selected for release represent a subset of all assessment questions administered in 2022. The distribution of questions among the five mathematical content areas is a key feature of the assessment as it reflects the relative importance given to each of the content areas at each grade. The distribution of released questions covers all five mathematics content areas and reflects the distribution for all questions administered in 2022 and 2019. It should be noted that these released questions do not represent the full range of assessed mathematical content.
Student performance results are expressed as the average percent correct for each question in 2022 compared to performance on the same set of questions that were administered as part of the 2019 assessments. The declines in average overall mathematics scores at grades 4 and 8 in 2022 are reflected in average percent correct performance on the released sample assessment questions.
CAAT has a dedicated STEP website, which has all the details of the examination (method of entry, dates, specificaions, etc) as well as downloadable past papers. (There is also a CAAT helpdesk which can be contacted online or by phone: 01223 553366.)
The full STEP specification is available on the Admissions Testing Service website. Note: even though the specification for STEP in 2019 onwards has changed from that in previous years, the style of the questions is unaltered, so most questions from previous papers can be used for preparation. Candidates should be aware that a small number of past paper questions are no longer on the specification and require mathematics that is no longer examined. STEP 1 papers are available and, although STEP 1 is no longer set, the papers provide useful preparation material. The STEP 1 specification was roughly equivalent to that of A level mathematics.
Many other universities recommend that their mathematics applicants practise on past STEP papers as preparation for university-style mathematics, and some encourage applicants to take STEP papers and may take STEP results into account.
There is plenty of material with which you can help yourself. The best preparation for STEP is to work through past papers. Full solutions are available to guide you if you get stuck. NB: the Faculty of Mathematics provides a free online STEP Support programme to help you develop your advanced problem-solving skills, from the summer of Y12 onwards, and prepare for STEP - see below for more details.
STEP is supposed to be difficult: it is aimed at the top 5% or so of all A-level mathematics candidates. It is therefore important to adjust your sights when tackling a STEP paper. The questions are much longer and more demanding than A-level questions (in A levels you are expected to answer 11-14 questions in two hours whereas in STEP papers you are expected to answer no more than 6 questions in three hours). They therefore look daunting; but you should not be daunted. With enough practice you will get better at tackling STEP questions and you will be well prepared to achieve the grades you need.
