I agree with Cindy’s assessment. The minister’s use of the book as an analogy was great-- of “borrowing” the earth, using during our lives, then “returning” it in as-good (or better) condition.

When people expressed concern about the mercury I shared that according to an article I read, the mercury content is far less than a standard florescent bulb—apparently smaller than the period at the end of a sentence. And besides, a CLF bulb lasts 10-15 years. So it is contributing far less waste than incandescent bulbs.

Hi Howie:

Sunday went very well, as you already know from David. I was very impressed with the level of committment of many members of their Green Committee and the minister, who did a very good job of getting the idea of stewardship across, including the young children who were in the congregation before heading off to their Sunday school classes. (He used the example of a very old book from the 1850's that he had borrowed from his father and was expected to return it in as good condition as he received it, or even better, by repairing the binding.)

A few people who received lightbulbs were concerned about mercury in the bulbs. One woman, pushing a child in a stroller, was quite vehement and would not take a bulb in spite of what I could tell her about safe disposal, etc. Some people have heard some well-publicized horror stories about mercury that we have to know how to deal with. Maybe we could give out info on this in the future along with any bulbs we give out. (I can get some of this info.)

Cindy
