The eyes of the international community were on Copenhagen for the last two weeks hoping, praying and waiting. Faith leaders, scientists, NGO's, international delegates and environmentalists waited expectantly for a legally binding climate treaty that would show a global commitment to staving off the worst effects of climate change, through emissions reduction and financing for adaptation and clean energies. Sr. Joan Brown of New Mexico IPL kept a BLOG of her experiences; an inter-generational group of all ethnicities and backgrounds, concerned with the welfare of the Earth and her inhabitants, were out in full force; demonstrators attempted to convince world leaders of the seriousness of climate change by engaging in acts of non-violent civil disobedience; and environmental leaders from developing nations, most vulnerable to climate change, fought to have their voices heard. After two weeks of negotiations, the Copenhagen Accord was created - a non-binding agreement by the U.S., China, India, South Africa and Brazil. The text to this agreement can be found HERE. CIPL believes that while this wasn't a perfect outcome, it is an important first step. We will use the increased awareness raised in Copenhagen to bring more religious leaders in California into their pulpits with our religious response to global warming message. Along with Governor Schwarzenegger, who traveled to Copenhagen to urge the global community to embrace clean technology, California's faith community can show the world by example the way to care for creation, save money and create jobs. In light of the Copenhagen Accord, what is
left for the global faith community is a deeper resolve to act, to
practically reduce its emissions and to convince larger society to do the
same by its example. For no matter what happens around us, we must
continue to listen to our Creator's call, and care for the beautiful earth
and her inhabitants. We applaud the on-going actions of our CIPL member
congregations, and the commitments made at the unprecedented interfaith MEETING
at Windsor Castle in November. As people of faith, we would like to know your thoughts and reactions to this gathering in Copenhagen. If you have burning ideas about what happened or what did not happen, we are interested in hearing them. You may send your them to in...@interfaithpower.org. In 2010, CIPL is planning to re-double its efforts to reach as many congregations as possible and increase the strength of the faith community's response to global warming. It is particularly important at this time that we keep up the pressure on our political leaders; the faith community is accomplishing a great deal when it comes to reducing the threat of environmental danger, and our political leaders must, at least, match that effort. Your help is vitally important as we build on the Copenhagen meeting to establish California congregations as leaders on climate protection. Make a DONATION now and join our efforts. Thank you in advance. Many blessings for a happy, healthy and more sustainable 2010! The Reverend Canon Sally Bingham, Susan, Jennifer, Allis and the CIPL Team!
