CAN THE FARMERS DOUBLE THEIR INCOME? MANY QUESTIONS, A FEW ANSWERS
Please find attached my latest Article published in Odia Daily Paryabekhyak today in which I have critically examined many issues related to Agriculture, particularly in Tribal Areas. One is baffled by the gap between the NOMINAL INCOME and REAL INCOME envisaged by Agricultural Economists. On the other hand whether 5 years is a reasonable period of time to achieve the target as envisaged by NITI AYOG or not one is torn between ambition and reality. I have seen various nuances of Agriculture Development in Tribal Areas since last 30 years and have seen both success and failure. Day by day, more and more tribals are displaced from agriculture because it is no longer addressing their issues related Food Security and Food Sovereignty nor giving them enough Livelihood and Income Securities. Migration is much preferred. Then what is the way out? A new chapter has to start with going back to their traditional natural farming with support of soil and water conservation, support for indigenous seeds, minimum support price, adequate insurance against cop failure, processing and marketing and the recognition that the Agricultural Produce coming out of tribal areas is of high value, healthy and ecologically guaranteed. With my experience, I can say that the Income can be doubled provided the tribals are given an opportunity to decide on the path of their Paramparagat Krishi ( traditional farming ) with generations of knowledge and wisdom. Let us not argue on what is right or wrong. Just do it. Reverse the process of trapping them in Chemical or commercial Agriculture

I have renewed writing after a long gap as things are gloomy and depressing all around but I want to share the hopes I see among the tribal farmers - both old and young!
