CELEBRATION OF WORLD WATER DAY
Today is World Water Day and so many things are in my mind. Myself and my Organisation Agragamee have been campaigning on WATER FOR ALL, We have tried to reach the unreached to provide Drinking Water, Irrigation and above all Water Security. We have also tried to influence the Water Policy to make it pro-poor. We have sunk many Bore-wells and installed Hand pumps; constructed hundreds of Water Harvesting Structures and Check dams, helped the communities to dig Tanks and Farm Ponds, played a role in forming Odisha Water Forum; gave a call CATCH RAIN WATER WHERE IT FALLS and published a NEWSLETTER in Odia. But all our efforts are a drop in ocean as many villages I have been visiting in remote areas are still facing water scarcity both for drinking and irrigation. We strongly believe that unless assured irrigation is available, Food and Livelihood Securities of the Farming Community cannot be ensured. We are of the firm opinion that unless there is proper water supply, the sanitation programme will not achieve its goal. If safe water is not available to everyone in tribal areas, they will be dependent on polluted stream water and will die of Cholera and Diarrhoea etc. Today, let us note that we have a responsibility in providing safe water and leaving no one aside on any ground! Let there be no commodification of water on any ground. Let the Access to safe water be Universal!
