WHERE HAVE THE VOLUNTEERS AND THEIR ORGANISATIONS HAVE GONE?
The Article Published in Odia Daily Paryabekhayk on 13th August in which I have expressed anguish on the dying culture of Voluntarism. What Oxfam officials have done in Haiti during the disaster relief in the time of earthquake cannot be condoned, especially sexual explorations in exchange of relief materials. I was once proud of Oxfam in which I had started my development career in the late 1970s. It was quite revealing that the then officials were taking hefty salaries and were exploiting women workers. But Oxfam's international reputation was giving these officials maximum prestige and social standing and they could cover up all their nefarious activities. It is not Oxfam alone but many International Donors and International Aid Organisations had so many skeletons in the cupboard.
In Odisha one UN Organisation had started the Hotel Culture and was instrumental in promoting it among Voluntary Organisations/NGOs. Precious aid coming for women and children were very cunningly spent in the name of convenience! No accountability and no transparency!
I am watching helplessly how the spirit of voluntarism is dying along with their organisations and how the priorities have been very systematically changed in the name of Professionalism and Corporatisation. How the Resources are drying up for those committed volunteers and their organisations!
