To succeed in boot camp, you should prepare yourself physically and mentally. Daily cardio, weight training, pushups and situps are a must. You should also practice arriving early on a regular basis and sticking to a strict schedule. You should also delegate personal affairs to family or friends so you can focus on your training. For example, you will need to figure out who will pay the bills, collect the mail and manage bank accounts while you are at boot camp.
Good to know: By enlisting, you are contractually obligated to complete boot camp and serve. However, if you find that you are incompatible with serving, you can receive an administrative discharge.
Darlene Anderson: Boot camp is designed to, you know, break them down and to build them back up. Everything that happened at boot camp and that they learn in boot camp is for a reason, and you find out later on.
"The Environmental Justice Bootcamp brought together an outstanding lineup of leaders and experts and provided a comprehensive overview of environmental justice concepts and methods for environmental health researchers." - Postdoc at the NIH, 2022
"I was amazed at how effectively the EJ Bootcamp covered both academic issues (i.e., methodological issues in quantitative EJ research) and translation, communication, and implementation. The training felt very grounded and as someone who is still very earl in my career, I came away feeling more knowledgeable about EJ research topics and methods and empowered to pursue research questions related to environmental justice." - Academic staff member at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, 2021

The boot camp is a great opportunity for staffers to learn from leading scholars in AI. Not only will participants have ample opportunity to engage with featured speakers, but also to connect with fellow staffers who are thinking about the same issues. Further, staffers will receive a Stanford University certificate of completion upon the conclusion of the boot camp. We encourage staffers working on technology issues to apply.
Participants will receive round-trip airfare and ground transportation to Stanford University from Washington, DC, housing near the Stanford campus, and meals that are part of the boot camp. Stanford HAI diligently complies with congressional ethics rules.
With the exception of one "week-long" camp we will run this summer, all camps provide students with a total of 10 writing days. The "Classic" Boot Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. We are happy to note that based on feedback from previous Dissertation Boot Campers, we are also offering a "Before Dawn" session beginning at 8 am and a few sessions that begin later at 10am. Please review all dates on the DBC Annual Schedule.
Attendees who complete a boot camp will be considered Emerge boot camp alums and have access to alum resources, as well as continuing education opportunities. Tuition may be paid by personal or campaign committee accounts. Due to campaign finance regulations, Emerge and its affiliates cannot provide scholarships to boot camp participants.
The Math Boot Camp is a short and intensive In-Person, web-based math workshop to help students improve their math skills or place into a more advanced mathematics class (MAC1105 or higher). The boot camp provides group/individual instruction together with a MyOpenMath course. There is an Online boot camp for FAU students admitted to fully online programs which is also provided on a limited basis to FAU students when recommended by an FAU advisor in consultation with Dr. Drees.
Students start the MBC by taking an assessment in MyOpenMath to determine their current skill level. After the initial Assessment students then continue into the remediation modules with the assistance of MBC Assistants and Dr. Kevin Drees, Mathematics Sr. Instructor. Students retake the MyOpenMath assessment at the end of the camp to determine if they will return to their desired course.
If you are required to take the MBC before registering for a mathematics course for a second or third attempt, you must fulfill 36 hours in the Math Emporium Lab on the Boca Raton Campus. Students are also required to reach a minimum percentage on the Final Assessment exam given at the end of each Boot Camp. Students are strongly encouraged to sign up for their course directly following the boot camp. Success rates are proven to be much better when doing so.
The cost for each boot camp is $200. If you are required to repeat the MBC Program (having taken the camp once before), there is a discounted fee of $150 if you do it within one year of the last full fee course attended. You can also repeat the course to elevate your tests scores and use the repeat discount. If you are a returning student and would like to receive the discount code, simply call our office for instructions, 561.297.1036 or email Wendy Kasten at wka...@fau.edu or Kevin Drees at kdr...@fau.edu.
Please notify us by phone or email at least 48 hours before the course begins if you must cancel a course. You will receive a full refund for the canceled boot camp. If less than 48 hours notice is given, you will be charged a $15 processing fee for the cancellation. No cancellations will be accepted AFTER a course begins.
