Hey guys,

I was thinking about the album project and how daunting it seemed.
Especially with people juggling work and stuff. I was wondering if
there were enough people signed-up to participate in the project to
start creating workgroups that focus on a specific need.

promotion
mixing/editing
funding
submission
etc.

Just a thought. Even if we split these responsibilities amongst
ourselves, it would give people a place to channel their energies.

I think that's a good idea. After the holidays (next week) we can
send an e-mail out to everyone who's signed up to work on the project
(around 50 or 60 at last count) and see who is actually interested in
participating.

I've been working on the mechanics of collecting the submissions and
displaying them for other people to root through. The submission form
is up at http://www.rifflet.com/node/add/album-submission (you'll need
to login first to see it). I was thinking about requiring a login in
order to make a submission, just so we'd have some idea of who is
participating and have a way of contacting everyone involved. What do
you think?

Other than that, I think we should just set a date and open it up for
entries. It's hard to know what issues are going to come up, so we may
as well get it started!

I'd like to thank everyone again for all your help and feedback so
far--Have a great holiday.

Sometime in the middle of January should be good. We want to announce it on a slow news cycle to get more attention. I would make the deadline a musically significant date (birthday, album title etc). A press release will be needed, but if we do it the standard way and put out a meme (video) using some samples from the site to build interest it will be more effective and reach the net savvy audience we want.  The video doesn't have to be much, just some images from the site, a voice over, music samples and a funny concept.

Let me know what you think...

Hope your holidays are going well!  I've been doing a lot of work on the logistic side of the album project, and I think we have a pretty good system worked out.  The main screen is still located at http://www.rifflet.com/album, and there's a link to submit an entry (login required).

Here are the rules I'm thinking about (which are also listed prominently on the page):
    1. Submission deadline is July 1, 2010.
    2. Each song must have at least 2 authors (contributors).
    3. Each song must be less than six minutes.
    4. One author can contribute to a maximum of 5 songs on the album.
I like Devin's idea of limiting the album to 10 songs, but I figure an actual date-based deadline will get people in gear a little more quickly, and it gives us an opportunity for more publicity ("There's only 1 week left..."). Plus we may not get a ton of submissions, so this keeps it from languishing indefinitely.  I'd like to publicly announce the project  with some actual entries in place, so I was thinking about sending a note out to the Google group asking people to submit some stuff before the official opening.

What dates seem reasonable to you for opening? For the deadline? What do you think is the best way to get the word out?  Sorry for the massive e-mail and thanks again for your help.

Talk to you soon,
Jon
