Hi All,
Resource Recovery is pleased to introduce its new ‘Ready, Set, Sort!’ game to help you learn how to dispose of your stuff here in Rhode Island. Click HERE to play!
As you play, you’ll learn if items can be recycled in your bin or cart, added to your home compost bin, dropped-off locally, or simply put in the trash. The more you play, the more you’ll learn how to keep valuable resources out of RI’s Central Landfill. Sort materials correctly and win fun items to build your own virtual park! For additional disposal information, visit our A to Z list: http://atoz.rirrc.org/
If you have any questions, you can contact us for more information at in...@rirrc.org.

Best,
Madison

Hi Amanda,
We are so glad you enjoyed playing the game and you bring up two great questions!
After much discussion, we decided that if items in their current form (i.e. a paper towel roll, paper egg carton, etc.,) cannot be placed in a compost bin as is, we would only list them as recyclable. We teach that these items should be cut into smaller pieces so they break down properly in a compost bin, but we are not able to provide that level of instruction in the game. We did make items like paper towels, napkins, and shredded paper compostable in the game since they can be added to a compost bin as is.
Regarding the purple cat (and other somewhat odd prizes) we unfortunately do not have control over changing those items. We have sent the developers at ReCollect a message regarding this so if we do have control over the prizes in the future we will happily remove the purple cat.
Best,
Madison

Hi Madison,
What an amazing idea! When I'm unsure from here on out, I may just play till I get to my question answered instead of going to the also wonderful but not nearly as fun A-Z list. I do have one related question and one request if it's not too late.
The question relates to the things like toilet paper rolls and paper towels being a no for the compost. Is that in reference to a RIRRC compost program that won't take those in its compost, is it just a factor of the game only allowing one correct answer, or is there yet another reason of which I haven't even thought?
The request is to consider replacing the purple cat if it's not too late. I know it may not be intended as a real cat, but those of us in the wildlife field would love help with messaging that cats outdoors are a big problem for wildlife (birds, small mammal, reptiles and amphibians especially). If you want more info, this is one good website from the bird angle especially: https://abcbirds.org/program/cats-indoors/ [abcbirds.org]. Though we don't often send the general public to it directly (at least not unsolicited) because feelings understandably run high when you're sharing unwelcome advice about beloved pets. Either way, thank you so much for considering. And thanks for making this amazing game that could really move the needle in getting people to recycle correctly and remind them that composting is an option, too!
