Dear Friends,

Beth Newbury, Non-Toxic Advocate, joins me this month on the Story Walking Radio Hour to talk about

Clean Made Simple: Natural Toxin-Free Living.

We discuss the importance of reading product labels for health and safety and recognizing ingredients categorized as PFAS, which are often referred to as "forever chemicals," because they do not break down easily in the environment and can accumulate in living organisms, posing potential health risks.

Beth started her foray into non-toxic living 16 years ago when her middle son, Liam was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome. She began reading labels on her products and researching the ingredients and realized that many conventional products contain neurotoxins. This drove her passion to educate others on the same topic, and she began supporting more families with switching out to non-toxic alternatives. In addition to her work as an advocate for Pure Haven, a Rhode-Island based company, Beth also chairs the Groundwater Protection Committee in her town of North Smithfield, Rhode Island, where the town has been testing water for PFAS. Firefighting foams are one source of PFAS.

An example of a skincare product containing PFAS is sunscreen. Bottles labeled as "water-resistant" are more likely to contain PFAS. Sunscreens wash off our bodies into lakes, rivers and oceans. Four sunscreen ingredients were banned in Hawaii because of the damage they cause to coral reefs.

Back in 2021, I published an article in Green Teacher magazine, titled A Look Inside the Bottle: How sunscreen ingredients may adversely affect marine ecosystems. The article provides teachers, grades 5 and up, with a meaningful cross-cutting curriculum that combines lessons in consumer research, data collection, science literacy, secondary research, policy development, community-building activities, and civic engagement. The curriculum offers a solid entry point into the topic of Toxin-Free Living. Attached.
