Calling all 7th grade teachers and specialists!
I’m thrilled to introduce 'Ecosystem Explorers,' a new field trip program at the Norman Bird Sanctuary specifically designed for 7th graders. Thanks to a generous grant from the Frederick Henry Prince Memorial Fund, we are offering these sessions free of
charge to support students' physical health, mental well-being, and academic growth.
During these sessions, students will explore our 300-acre "living laboratory" through guided hikes across diverse ecosystems. The curriculum bridges classroom Life Science with hands-on field science, including:
-
Physical Wellness: Cardiovascular exercise and "joyful play" in nature.
-
Mental Health: Integrated mindfulness activities providing practical tools to manage stress and anxiety.
-
Active Conservation: First-hand experience with data-driven land management and habitat restoration.
To ensure all students can participate, our Universal Trail provides a fully accessible route for all mobility levels. Additionally, to remove financial barriers:
-
Admission is FREE for all participating 7th grade groups.
-
Dedicated transportation stipends are available for Title I schools on a first come first serve basis.
-
Every student will receive a family pass to encourage continued engagement with the outdoors.
All programs are approximately two hours and take place rain or shine. Groups are welcome to bring lunch, with outdoor picnic areas available and indoor space reserved in case of inclement weather. Optional unguided hiking may also be added before departure.
We would love to welcome your students to the Sanctuary for this unique program. Program space is limited and offered on a first come first serve basis for spring and fall sessions.
