Hi RIEEA folks,

I recently listened in on two webinars on AI that I wanted to pass along to this community. One is "AI, Education, and Ethics for a Changing World" from NAAEE, which provided insight into the mechanics of teaching in a world where AI is increasingly pervasive.

The second is "AI, Energy Demand, and the Environment: Perspectives on Information Sharing" from The National Academies. This panel discussion shed light on social science studies of what people do and do not know about the environmental impact of AI use, as well as insights into messaging to AI consumers and demand for these tools. I could see this content being a useful for environmental educators who are figuring out how to talk about the costs of AI on our planet.

Best,

Rachel

Thank you so much, Rachel! I found both of these webinars very interesting, and encourage others to check them out. For those of you who might not find the time, however, I do offer a few key sections to view:

In AI, Education, and Ethics for a Changing World, I found Joan Haley's section about AI and Environmental Education quite grounding and helpful. She starts speaking at 44:14.

In AI, Energy Demand, and the Environment: Perspectives on Information Sharing, there were a few sections that were particularly interesting to me:
  • 17:42 - where to find climate specific generative AI (so that you know you're not getting mis- or dis-information)
  • 36:00 - some ways that AI is currently helping achieve climate goals (e.g. tracking the water/energy needs of people displaced by climate change)
  • 45:15 - ways that AI should be used to achieve climate goals, according to the AI & Climate Roundtable of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine
In addition, RIEEA's Communications Manager, Mary Dolan, shared this really awesome TED Talk with me about how AI was used to help scientists understand wolf sounds - super cool!

💡And lastly, here's a tip to reduce your AI energy use:💡
Open a new thread when you're changing topics in AI, so that the previous (and now irrelevant) information isn't also being processed at the same time.
