Morley Field in Pawtucket’s Woodlawn neighborhood has been closed for too long. This small but vital park is the community’s only walkable greenspace – a place where residents have gathered for sports, family events, and river access since the 1970s.
Half of Morley Field was donated for public use
in perpetuity. The other half was purchased with federal Land and Water Conservation Funds, meaning it can’t be repurposed without National Park Service approval. In other words: the public has a legal right to this space.
Research shows parks like Morley Field improve health, boost academic success, strengthen communities, and even reduce crime. With a new high school planned nearby, this will be the only greenspace for 400 students to learn, play, and grow.
We call on Mayor Grebien and the Pawtucket City Council: Reopen and rehabilitate Morley Field. It’s the legal choice, the ethical choice, and the smart choice for Pawtucket’s health, safety, and future.
