MassEVIPMulti-Unit Dwelling & Educational Campus Charging is one of several MassDEP rolling grant programs aimed at making electric vehicles (EVs) and EV charging stations more widely available across Massachusetts.

The Multi-Unit Dwelling & Educational Campus Charging Program provides incentives for property owners or managers to acquire and install Level 1 and Level 2 EV charging stations. Multi-unit dwellings with five or more residential units and educational campuses with at least 15 students on site are eligible.


Level 1 and Level 2 AC (not DC) electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) sold and installed in Massachusetts must comply with the Energy Star energy efficiency standards and be listed in the State Appliance Standards Database (SASD). If at any point you want to change your current approved equipment, be sure that your new equipment is also listed in the SASD.

MassDEP accepts applications on a first-come, first-served basis until all available funding is spent.

From the perspective of my own business, Mastering Multi-Units (MMU) the work being done by Prof. Edger helps us to get under the skin of the role and begin to understand why certain behaviours and activities matter more than others.


For my money, any good multi-unit manager knows that to achieve the former (consistently) requires a good degree of focus on the later; developing the management teams and their direct reports to enhance their capabilities to deliver for the long-term.


All of this of course is dependent on a genuine desire to develop others (especially their direct reports) to be able to think and act along the same lines whilst having the confidence and competence to manage the performance of others consistently and fairly.

The California public is now protected from exposure to ETS in all indoor public workplaces (with a few exceptions), therefore being exposed in your own home has become a greater nuisance for the non-smoking public (85% of Californians). While the indoor common areas of multi-family housing complexes (including hallways, stairwells, and laundry and recreation rooms) are considered workplaces under the State's workplace smoking ban, secondhand smoke(SHS) in adjoining units of an apartment complex or condominium can seep in and expose non-smokers who may then suffer adverse health effects. The California Department of Health Services says that even if apartment residents do not smoke in their home they are still at risk from SHS seepage through shared walls, ventilation systems, doors and windows. According to John Howard MD, Chief of the California Dvision of Occupational Safety and Health (CAL OSHA), SHS can "move through light fixtures, ceiling crawl spaces, and into and out of doorways." This puts tenants at risk for "irritant, allergic, acute and chronic cardiopulmonary and carcinogenic adverse health effects." More Information

Public and private multi-unit housing properties across the country have moved to solve this problem by making their housing, including individual units, smokefree. This move not only protects residents and staff from exposure to secondhand smoke, but also saves properties thousands of dollars in costs to turnover units and significantly reduces fire risk for buildings. Note that solutions short of making the entire building smokefree such separating smokers from nonsmokers, cleaning the air or ventilation systems cannot eliminate exposure to the toxins in secondhand smoke, according to the U.S. Surgeon General.


The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)'s rule that made all public housing smokefree took effect July 30, 2018. This rule protected close to two million public housing residents, including 760,000 children, from exposure to secondhand smoke when it was implemented. The American Lung Association is a strong supporter of HUD's smokefree housing rule and pushed for its passage for over a decade.


The accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant underlined the need to assess the nuclear safety of multi-unit sites considering the accident sequences involving more than one reactor units on site. The objective of this Safety Report is to provide a methodology for the development of a Multi-unit Probabilistic Safety Assessment (MUPSA). It provides practical examples and an overview of the actual state of practice in this area. The publication provides a detailed description of Level 1 MUPSA methodology, the principles of development of Level 2 MUPSA models and the path forward for multi-unit consequence analysis (Level 3 MUPSA). In addition, it summarizes the experience available in Member States in the area of MUPSA. The scope of this Safety Report includes consideration of various hazards and plant operational states normally considered in PSA development in the multi-unit context.


The Multiunit Dwelling Electric Vehicle Charging Grant Program is designed to identify and incentivize the installation of electric vehicle charging solutions the provide convenient, reliable, and affordable access to home charging for residents of multi-unit housing.


Spring 2022 Pilot Program Description

In 2022, the legislature appropriated $1,000,000 in funding to pilot a program to incentivize the installation of charging stations at multi-unit dwelling affordable housing units, making EV home charging access more equitable and affordable for residents in multiunit housing.


The program recently awarded 13 project proposals from affordable and non-profit multiunit housing providers across 8 counties. These projects will result in 84 new Level 2 charging ports at 37 locations, reducing the home charging access barrier to EV ownership for 6,230 homes in affordable multifamily buildings.
