Hi all!

A few neighbors have voted to hold a neighborhood-wide yard sale on June 6. This is the perfect opportunity to clean out your basement, make some room in your house, and otherwise get rid of items that you don’t need anymore. We hope to make it a yearly tradition if it goes well!

If you are interested in participating, please call or text Carolyn Mueller at (212) 928-9954 by June 1 with your name, address and a general idea of what you’ll be selling so she can advertise your participation - she has come up with a map showing each participating household's address to make buyers aware of where they can shop that day!

Carolyn has graciously offered to purchase signage to help drivers find the sale, and we  will be cross-posting advertisements to multiple Facebook groups. The more the merrier! If desired, we could possibly coordinate among ourselves to consolidate thrift store drop off for anything that goes unsold.

If you’re participating, please also reply to let us know what time you’d like to sell until.

Looking forward to this!

Laura Hutchins

Hello neighbors, I apologize - I unintentionally went the wrong route when gauging interest for a neighborhood yard sale and now need to apply the brakes. I’m told that the commission would need to approve something like this to ensure differing opinions are heard and taken into account. If there are any voices who feel strongly about advocating for a neighborhood sale, Katy is open to putting it on the agenda for July’s commission meeting. Laura Hutchins

Wait so is the yard sale off then? I’d already piled half my house to sell. 😂

Hello Neighbors,

I do want neighbors to know that neighborhood yard sales have happened in the past, and to my knowledge there are no ordinances against residents having a yard sale.

I understand some neighbors may not have been aware of previous sales, and that is unfortunate. At the same time, we are a friendly neighborhood that has historically welcomed visitors for community events such as Halloween and the Luminaries.

Participation in a neighborhood yard sale is, of course, entirely optional. My intention was simply to help neighbors who wanted to participate have a successful day and make it easier for people to find participating homes.

Since there is precedent for neighborhood yard sales and this is not a new activity for Ridgeside, I personally do not feel this is something that requires Commission approval or a vote. I would hate to create unnecessary restrictions around something neighbors have peacefully done in the past.

I truly intended this in the spirit of community and supporting neighbors, and I hope those who would like to participate are able to do so.

I am sure we will talk some more,

Carolyn

Great! And totally agree. We hadn’t thought to participate, but fully support.

We did a yard sale at 10 Ridgeside Rd. about 10 or 15 years ago and appx. 10+ other Ridgeside families participated and it went really well.

Thanks

Hi neighbors,

There is no ordinance against neighborhood yard sales. Maybe just let people know when it is and if they want to join, they can. If they don't, then don't. Let's not make this difficult. Not everything needs to be approved by the commission.  That is a slippery slope. We don't have time to participate but good luck!

Hi Neighbors,

I wanted to send a quick update regarding the yard sale idea.

My original thought in creating a simple map of participating homes came from remembering the last neighborhood sale, when sales were shared publicly (in Facebook groups and the newspaper), but participating addresses were not listed. As a result, people ended up driving throughout the neighborhood trying to determine which homes were participating, and some participating homes were missed altogether.

The intention of a simple participating-home map was actually to reduce unnecessary driving through the neighborhood and make things feel more organized and respectful for both participating and non-participating neighbors.

To help keep things organized and considerate, my thought is simply that several participating homes could hold yard sales on the same day, with participating homes shared closer to the date in a more limited and practical way.

Participating homes could keep similar hours (for example 7:00 AM–2:00 PM), and a simple map of participating homes only could be made available closer to the date, including through a QR code at the neighborhood entrances to help direct visitors to participating homes and reduce unnecessary driving through the neighborhood.

My hope is simply to make things easy, organized, and respectful for everyone.

If there are concerns I may not be seeing or ideas that would help make this feel more comfortable for neighbors, I’m genuinely open to hearing them. Please feel free to reach out to me directly. I care about our neighborhood and want to be thoughtful in how we approach things and considerate of everyone involved.

Warmly,

Carolyn
