Ridgefield Refuge Complex News & Events
Concerning the Government Shutdown
Due to the lapse in federal appropriations, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is unable to fully staff the properties under its management. However, where public access to refuge lands does not require the presence of a federal employee or contractor, activities on refuge lands will be allowed to continue on the same terms as before the appropriations lapse, includingany activities conducted under a previously issued permit (when required). Visitors are advised to use caution if choosing to enter units of the National Wildlife Refuge System, as most FWS personnel will not be available for the duration of the shutdown. Law enforcement personnel will remain on duty to provide emergency services and protect government property. However, any entry onto Refuge System property during this period of federal government shutdown is at the visitor’s sole risk. |

Getting a Closer Look
At the beginning of the summer, the contact station volunteers, with permission from the FWS staff, brought in a seed feeder to hang in one of the cottonwoods by the station. We started with black oil sunflower seeds. It was a slow birding summer. Mostly we had visits from the California Scrub Jays. They have been frequent visitors for some time. Volunteer Opportunities:
Habitat Restoration
Volunteers get to see the most beautiful places on the Refuge while helping to ensure that native wildlife have food and shelter. Summer work is focused on maintaining winter plantings and controlling invasive plants that threaten to take over habitat. Crews meet on most Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Refuge and Trail Greeters
Over 120,000 visitors flock to the Refuge annually to enjoy nature through participation in wildlife observation, photography, environmental education, cultural interpretation, hunting, and fishing. Volunteers help to make their experiences meaningful. Share your enthusiasm for nature and make the Refuge a welcoming place for people walking our trails, stopping at the Visitor Contact Station and driving the Auto Tour. | Cathlapotle Plankhouse
The Cathlapotle Plankhouse draws thousands of visitors to the Refuge each year. Help share the legacy of the Indigenous people who have tended to this land since time immemorial as a Plankhouse Docent or Cultural Educator. Field trips take place during the weekdays. Education
Help us inspire the next generation. Kids of all ages need hands-on learning and inspiration in the great outdoors as part of a well-rounded education. Cathlapotle Plankhouse Updates & Events
This winter we are working hard on our second year of revitalizing our Cultural and Environmental Education Program. Refuge and Friends staff are focused on connecting the Since Time Immemorial (STI) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) curricula for in-classroom and on-site visits. The Cathlapotle Plankhouse Collections are being reviewed and updated to contemporary curatorial standards. Come see us in the spring and check out some of the display changes in the Plankhouse. Habitat Restoration Updates & Events
Thank you to the volunteers who braved the weather in December to come out and help us clear and plant around the Ash trees for improved deer habitat.Right now we are currently focused on clearing and seeding under our mature Ash trees on the River ‘S’ Unit, and removal of beaver fencing at the Carty Unit at Ridgefield NWR. In mid-January through March the priority will be planting 700 shrubs at Pierce NWR and 350-400 trees and shrubs at Ridgefield NWR. These work parties will be Wednesdays at Ridgefield from 9:00am-12:00 pm, and Saturdays at Pierce NWR with shifts at 8:30am-12:00pm and 12:00pm-4:00pm (limit 12 volunteers for Saturday crews, sign-up required) until everything is planted.
