That's right, we will roll out a week from today to honor fallen
cyclists and to raise awareness that bike riders just want to share
the road with motorists. Remember to mark your calendar to meet next
Wednesday, May 18 by 6:30pm for sign-in and pre-ride information. We
are again meeting downtown Harbor Springs in the parking lot behind
the Harbormaster - 250 East Bay Street. The ride will commence
promptly at 7:00pm worldwide & I hope to see you there. If you have a
yellow RoS T-shirt from last year, please wear it to the event as a
show of unity. I have a few left from last year to give to new
participants (I'm sorry I was unable to get new shirts for
2011...hopefully for 2012!)

The route this year is pretty much the same (except no street
construction) in and around Harbor Springs. We also really want this
year's ride to follow the laws as set by the Michigan Vehicle code
pertaining to bicyclists to ride no more than two abreast and want all
riders to maintain a double-file procession. I have not asked either
the HS Police or Emmet Co. Sheriff to provide a vehicle escort as I
felt the group was a little too sloppy & it didn't send the right
message. The HSPD will be assisting in traffic control at
intersections as best they can.
If you're looking for more information on the laws pertaining to
bicyclists, check out the League of Michigan Bicyclist website:
http://www.lmb.org - it is a great resource for cycling information
and advocacy.
I look forward to seeing everyone next week with their yellow shirts,
bikes & helmets. In the meantime, ride safely and Share the Road, it's
the law.
