Vuze (previously Azureus) is a BitTorrent client used to transfer files via the BitTorrent protocol. Vuze is written in Java, and uses the Azureus Engine. In addition to downloading data linked to .torrent files, Azureus allows users to view, publish and share original DVD and HD quality video content.[6] Content is presented through channels and categories containing TV shows, music videos, movies, video games, series and others.

Azureus was first released in June 2003 at SourceForge.net, mostly to experiment with the Standard Widget Toolkit from Eclipse. It later became one of the most popular BitTorrent clients.[7] The Azureus software was released under the GNU General Public License, and remains as a free software application. It was among the most popular BitTorrent clients. However, the Vuze software added in more recent versions is proprietary and users are required to accept these more restrictive license terms.

Vuze is the only client that makes clearnet torrents available on I2P and vice versa. It has a plugin that connects to the I2P network. If the user adds a torrent from I2P, it will be seeded on both I2P and the clearnet, and if a user adds a torrent from the clearnet, it will be seeded on both the clearnet and I2P. For this reason, torrents previously published only on I2P are made available to the entire Internet, and users of I2P can download any torrent on the Internet while maintaining the anonymity of I2P.[8][9]

Azureus was first released in June 2003 at SourceForge.net. The blue poison dart frog (Dendrobates azureus) was chosen as the logo and name of the brand by co-creator Tyler Pitchford. This choice was due to Latin names of poison dart frogs being used as codenames for his development projects.

In 2006 Vuze was released as an attempt to transform the client into a "social" client by a group of the original developers forming Azureus Inc., shortly to be renamed Vuze, Inc. A Vuze-free version of Azureus was released along with Vuze during the beta period. The releases used version numbers 3.0, while the Vuze-free versions continued with the 2.5 release numbers.[10] In addition, some developers voiced opposition to the idea of completely transforming the client.[citation needed] Starting with an unknown version, Vuze was coupled with Azureus. Soon after, "NoVuze" modified versions were released on The Pirate Bay, and as of September 15, 2008, are available for versions up to 3.1.1.0. On June 16, 2008, the developers of Azureus/Vuze decided to stop releasing versions named Azureus, and complete the name change with the release of version 3.1. The client engine however, remains unchanged as Azureus.

Up to version 2.5.0.4, Azureus was distributed under the GNU General Public License (GPL); beginning with the version 3 distribution, the license presented upon installation changed. While it still states that the "Azureus Application" is available under the GPL, completing installation requires the user to agree to the terms of the "Vuze Platform," which include restrictions on use, reverse-engineering,[11] and sublicensing.[12] As with many similar licenses, the Azureus licence includes a prohibition on use of the software by people "under the age of 18."[13]Allegedly, the TOS only applies to the website, vuze.com, and not the software,[14] however the actual TOS include the application as part of the platforms.[15]

Maintenance and development of Vuze ground to a halt in early 2017, with no new releases or commits being made since April, featured content becoming inaccessible, and users reporting outdated antivirus definitions.[18] The two main developers left the project and focused their efforts on a fork called BiglyBT,[19] which removed Vuze's premium and proprietary features[20] such as DVD burning, gaming promotions, the video-sharing content network, and the installer's advertisements.[21][22]

In April 2020, TorrentFreak named BiglyBT the tenth popular BitTorrent client with 0.3% of the market share.[23][24] In September 2020, BiglyBT was the first BitTorrent client to implement support version 2 of the BitTorrent protocol, which was added to libtorrent, a library used by popular clients such as qBittorrent and μTorrent Web but not BiglyBT, a few weeks prior.[25][26]

Vuze is categorized as adware by Softpedia,[27] due to its inclusion of a Vuze Toolbar for web browsers. Vuze changes or offers to change home page and search and to install a promotional component not necessary for the program to function.[28] However, all adware can be declined by using a custom installation. In February 2010, What.CD and Waffles.fm, two large music sharing sites at the time, decided to ban the use of Vuze.[29]

Vuze includes built-in support for Tor, an anonymity network. The onion routers are run by volunteers using their own bandwidth at their own cost. Due to the high bandwidth usage caused by the BitTorrent protocol, it is considered impolite and inappropriate by Tor community members to use the Tor network for BitTorrent transfers.[31][32] By default, the Tor exit policy blocks the standard BitTorrent ports.[33]

When I click on a magnet link in Firefox it asks which app I want to open with. Transmission is shown but Vuze isn't listed. I click on 'Choose another Application' but I don't know where the application is. I can see /snap/vuze-vs with various sub-folders; 3, common and current each with their own sub-folders and files, but I have no idea where/what the actual 'executable' is.

Click on a magnet / torrent link in Firefox and if vuze is not an immediate option (competitor would be transmission) you can easily navigate to vuze and select this as the new default. See the screenshot below for this seen on my own system:

I am assuming that I will need to simply cut and paste the .torrent files that are contained in the Vuze application support Torrents folder (I'm on a Mac) over to the uTorrent application support folder. Then I will need to move all of the actual content files associated with each .torrent file from the Vuze Downloads folder over to a new designated folder that I select using the preferences window in uTorrent.

You're assuming something that won't happen. The resume state file for vuze is incompatible with uTorrent. You need to re-add the .torrents for the files manually, specifying the destination directory where applicable.

Okay, thanks. I am trying my first one but it seems to want to download the files rather than simply seed them. The pop up window seems to be oriented toward downloading and doesn't allow me to specify that the files are already on my computer and select the directory they are located in. The FAQ/Guides don't appear to match the Mac version of uTorrent, so they aren't very useful.

Again, I have already downloaded all of the files in these torrents. I can't re-down load them as the tracker is prohibiting me from downloading anything until I up my share ratio. So I simply need to seed these files that are already on my computer. But I'm not seeing anything in uTorrent that allows me to designate a location where these files are sitting and attach that location to the .torrent file.

Then I moved the folders containing the actual content files for each of the torrents from the old Documents/Vuze Downloads folder over to a new Music/Torrents folder I've created, also by copying and pasting them.

Now, in uTorrent, how should I set my preferences (and do changes automatically take effect or do I need to close uTorrent and then relaunch it for the changes to implement)? In Preferences, under "Directories", I have told uTorrent to place new downloads in the new Music/Torrents folder I mentioned above. I have left the "move completed downloads to.." box unchecked, so that both new downloads and completed downloads will be going to the same folder (Music/Torrents).

For location of .torrents, I have checked "store .torrents in the Application Support/uTorrent folder (which is where I had moved my old Vuze .torrent files in the first step above). I am leaving the "move .torrents for finished jobs" and "automatically load .torrents from" boxes unchecked.

Once these preferences are saved, I will now ask uTorrent to add one of the .torrent files from the Application Support/uTorrent folder. When I do so, a window will open automatically asking me to designate a location for downloaded files. If I understand you correctly, and given my description above, I should enter the new Music/Torrents/[specific file folder with the torrent content files] location here, because this is where the existing content files were copied to.

Once I've done this, uTorrent will recognize that the files listed in the .torrent file are already in the designated location and will check them and seed them rather than attempt to download them from peers. Is this accurate?

I've ruled out overheating, memory issues, malware & viruses. In fact, when I don't run Vuze for a few days, there are no lockups. I turn Vuze on and Bam! the system freezes after about an hour or so.

I've scoured the vuze forums and googled until my eyes dried up. Only one suggestion seems possible and I don't know how to do it or whether or not I should: update my LAN driver. ?? Don't even know where to start. (A quick google search did not help.)

EDIT: Wil (see below) advised updating the network card driver, which I did; unfortunately, after an hour of running vuze, XP came to a halt and I had to reset. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

EDIT2: So after reinstalling vuze, running its configuration wizard, reinstalling a network card driver, even unplugging the router for quite some time and downloading just through the modem, I would still have occasional lockups. Last time it locked up: router was plugged in, vuze was not running, no downloading/uploading; I was renaming files, deleting files---just reorganizing some folders in Explorer. Then the lockup happened. Someone suggested replacing the SATA cable to the hard drive SO THIS MAY NOT BE A VUZE ISSUE AFTER ALL.
