SOLVED!!! To make the document full screen, single-tap on the sides or top of the document. In the past a double-tap would do the trick, however, since the update that double-tap is now for magnifying the document.

Thanks for your reply I have sent you two example pictures. The first one is of the split page. The second one is of how it looks when I double click on the file that I want to open and that it zooms in, but stays in 'split mode'.
I am having the same problem. It started after the most recent update. I can not either make the document come up in Full Screen, or make the file list on the left go away. This is on an iPad with the latest iOS.
Getting this resolved is critical to me. Dropbox always reduced docs to fit on the right 2/3's of the screen while the file list occupies the left third. Before the last update I could view my docs full size by double tapping the top of the page to make the file list would go away. Worked great for YEARS. There is no button or gesture that will accomplish that now.
I have completed the survey at your request. I am disappointed that the survey only addressed the limited functionality of how to navigate to a previous issue and not all the problems with the current v14 update.
In my view, you would make me and your thousands of other subscribers happy by simply reverting to v13 of the app, rather than trying to redesign something starting with v14. Here is what I would like to see, which was all available in v13:
I sent and e-mail to Mr. San Filippo pointing him to this thread and also suggesting that he get on the Apple App Store and read the iPad reviews sorted for most recent. They will both give him the same picture.
Totally agree!! It has to be WSJ team that came up with this stupid idea. The only reason I can think of is that it reduces the app maintenance and release efforts by having a similar version across different platforms i.e. iPad , iPhone nevertheless the user experience on the iPad makes me less likely to renew my subscription.
Finally, they have made some major improvements and almost back to where it used to be. Re-subscribed after talking to customer service, they said I would see access to past issues in the app now. Downloaded version 14.8.0 Build 11924 and Viloa, there the back issues were under the Print Edition Icon on the bottom center of the app. This print edition is much better than what was there and resembles what they used to have. Select which issue by clicking on Browse Issues in top right corner. Can also select Sections in top left corner and you also see the light brown bar on the right with What' News and can scroll down. I am happy and glad they are getting things back up to where they used to be. Not the best way to treat customers and they paid a price for this in the long run.
I finally got an answer from WSJ customer service pointing me at the print edition app. It's essentially a copy of the print edition so you have to turn the page, then zoom in to finish an article. If I wanted the print edition (which I used to have) I'd buy one. I don't have print because WSJ can't deliver it reliably. Not sure which of their marketing geniuses came up with that one. (Maybe they hired some folks from Budweiser).
Anyway, the print edition app is a very poor substitute for the old iPad app. I went ahead and cancelled my subscription out of pure disappointment. Hopefully enough subscribers will push back and they will restart what was one of my favorite apps.
For assistance with adjusting the display properties of that particular app, you'll want to reach out to the developer: How to contact an app developer - Apple Support They would be in the best position to help with troubleshooting their specific app.
I had the same problem and called the WSJ Customer Service. I was told specifically that Apple changed the App. I have to believe that WSJ is in charge of their own app. As a result of the change the WSJ iPad app is useless to me, too hard to find the new daily news. I cancelled my subscription with regret.
Really disappointed with the change and was very puzzled why nothing was communicated about the change so thanks to these posts for confirming my suspicion. I go on safari to wsj.com to get views of the paper vs using the app. I want to cancel my wsj subscription but hoping they will come to their senses in the next few weeks and fix the ipad app.
i have the same issue on my 5th Gen Ipad Pro 12.9. When i finally got thru to a L2 support, they revealed that the app is managed by a third party and that it currently only works on the 6th gen models. in my experience this holds true as my wife has a 6th gen and the app works correctly.
The likely translation of the marketing word salad is, "even though we already developed a 5-star iPad-specifict version of the WSJ that fully utilizes its larger screen size, we're cheap and don't want to pay even the marginal incremental expense of maintaining an iPad version to keep up with the lastest iOS. So, instead, we're going to the lowest common denominator (the iPhone implementation), and render your iPad into a Super-Duper Phablet. Have a nice day." ?
Hi, I was wondering what was wrong so glad I found this thread. I have a 9th gen iPad and I'm running the latest iOS 16.6.1. It still won't go back to the old format. Can anyone confirm that we have lost the ability to download issues? does this mean that we have to be online to read? Thanks and what a stupid, irritating change. I won't renew.
Both rsponses amount to the same thing. "Yup, we changed it. We figure some folks will cancel but, that's the way things go. We really haven't looked into this too deeply because then we'd have to agree that we made a poor decision and that would require an apology."
We understand you have expressed concerns about the updates we recently implemented to the WSJ mobile app, including specific changes to the iPad experience. We greatly appreciate your feedback and we regret losing you as a valued customer.
In addition, the app now automatically downloads both the home feed and the Print Edition front page so readers can enjoy access to all of those articles, even if they are offline. Full Print Edition downloads will be available in the coming weeks, along with other features including layout optimizations for all screen sizes and orientations and easier navigation between articles.
I'm trying to use preview on my iPad for PDF slideshow presentations where I can also write notes with my pencil. The solution should be really simple: Change the presentation view from continuous scroll to single page view (as is possible on Mac) and edit slides/ add slides for notes where needed. The only issue is that I could not find any view settings for iPad. There are actually no settings at all.
From browsing other PadOS related issues , I understand that PadOS is different from MacOS and that not everything can be simply implemented. But surely it shouldn't be impossible to switch to single page view on iPad. There are actually third party apps out there that do that for iPad but that lack other capabilities/ design features that preview has.
I'm hoping I'm missing something and someone can point me towards how I can switch to single page view on iPad. If this doesn't exist, I really have to ask why? It seems like Apple simply ignored the fact that some people use PDFs for presentations rather than power point slides and completely missed out on providing proper documentation for preview on PadOS.
Features like this are actually really important as we present more things virtually and need solutions for virtual whiteboard. The comment/ annotation capabilities for preview are actually quite ideal for that (much better than zoom's whiteboard tool!). And if you're wondering why people use PDF slides instead of ppt's, try writing down algebra on PowerPoint.
Your workflow is personal and tools need to function the way you like to use them. One suggestion though, if you wish to revisit using single page view in Books, is to add x number of blank pages at the end of the PDF or after each page in the PDF before sharing to Books. If blank pages are interspersed, one is always available with a swipe or bypassed with two swipes. If blank pages are at the end, they can be navigated to either from the thumbnail bar or the all pages view.
I revisited this problem and unfortunately the solution does not solve the problem: I can use single page view in books for PDF but editing capabilities are actually limited compared to preview. One important difference is that I could not find an option to add blank PDF pages. But this is really important because it would essentially allow me to add individual "whiteboard pages" to my presentation. This really would allow me to do presentations on an iPad in the same way I would in a classroom or at a conference. At the moment I'm back to continuous scroll and preview because of the lack of this functionality in books.
What I do not understand is why these limitations exist? It seems to me that having single page view on preview should be simple to implement -- other PDF viewers and books have it, so it shouldn't be down to PadOS issues. Equally, one can insert pages to a PDF on PadOS, so why can't books. The way I see it, for this problem Apple has created two incomplete PDF viewers. Maybe I'm missing something, but if not this should really be fixed!
