GuitarPickup SimulationEffects circuit will respond differently to an input from a low impedance signal source such as an op-amp output than when driven directly from a guitar pickup. This can be especially evident with certain types of simple transistor circuits. The classic fuzz face is a good example of a circuit that has a low impedance input which produces a significantly different sound when connected to a guitar pickup than when it is preceded by a buffer or another effects box.A guitar pickup is not a constant low impedance voltage source. It has a variety of components and the basic representation is illustrated here.Vp is the voltage signal source of the pickup while Lp is the inductance of the coil and Rp is its the dc resistance. The C component is the capacitance of the tone control and the inherent capacitance of the cable that leads from the guitar to the effects box. There is some small amount of capacitance in parallel with Lp and Rp, however, it is too small to produce much effect and can be ignored for our purposes. To simulate the response of a guitar pickup, it is often recommended that some resistance should be added in series with the input of the effect. Typically 10k to 15k is equivalent to the resistance of a guitar pickup and while this does change the source impedance, its response is flat across the frequency range unlike that from the guitar. The RLC network of the guitar pickup and the connecting cable produces a response that is flat in the lower end of the range but has a peak in the upper mids and rapidly falls off in response at the high end. A simple resistor does not duplicate this response and a more complex circuit may be devised to simulate the guitar pickup. As shown here, an inductor, resistor and capacitor are configured to duplicate the inherent pickup components. The primary winding of a small transformer is used as the inductor. Mouser Electronics carries the transformer under the part number 42TM019 and it is quite inexpensive. The secondary of the transformer is not used and its windings are left unconnected. Since the dc resistance of the transformer primary coil is only about 600 ohms, resistance is added in series with the coil. The 330pF capacitor emulates the capacitance from the tone control and guitar cord. This circuit is inserted between the input jack of the effect and its pc board input. The primary of the transformer has a center tap which proves to be quite useful. When the switch is connected to the center tap, the inductance is equivalent to a single coil pickup. When the switch is toggled to place the full primary winding in the circuit, the inductance and response are similar to humbucking or other high output guitar pickups. The series resistance has been made variable so that it may be adjusted to more closely duplicate different pickups. Setting it to the mid-point is a good starting position. Adjusting it for more resistance will reduce the peaking of the circuit. The 330pF capacitor is suggested as an average value but it may be made slightly higher or lower for a different sound. Higher values will move the peak lower down the frequency range and lower capacitance values will move it up.The response of the RLC network shown produces a peak centered around 5600 Hz. and the signal response falls off rapidly after the peak.Other small signal transformers can be used instead of the one specified and if the inductance of the primary is different, the peak will be at a different frequency. This circuit may be used to add a frequency response before any circuit that will benefit from an input that emulates a guitar pickup. It can add a bit of enhanced high frequency response in addition to converting the signal impedance. The transformer is a miniature device and its physical size is small enough not to present a problem in its placement in a typical stompbox. The Mouser 42TL019 is a smaller transformer with similar response. This is a passive circuit that requires no batteries to operate and it may be mounted in a small enclosure with a dpdt switch for true bypass, and placed anywhere in the signal chain that proves advantageous. For example, the output of a Tube Screamer is always buffered and its impedance and frequency response are quite different from that of the guitar pickups. The pickup simulator circuit could be added at the input of the device following your Tube Screamer to get a more realistic response. Build this simple circuit and give a whole new sound to your Fuzzface or Wah!Update 21 Aug 2006: We can take the concept one step further and include the tone control and volume control of the guitar to load the coil down with an even more complex reactive network. This will more accurately simulate the guitar's wiring while the R-C (10/470p) on the output will take the place of the guitar cable that would typically connect the instrument with the amp. The final R-C pair can be eliminated if desired. The tone capacitor is 0.1uF as in the vintage Strat but lower values (0.022uF) are more commonly used on modern setups. This configuration would be useful on the input of a Fuzzface or even a booster pedal. Give it a try!

A way to help with this problem is by placing a Pickup Simulator (with its High Impedance) in front of the vintage fuzz circuit (e.g. Fuzz Face). What better way to build a pickup simulator than using an actual pickup? Jack Orman on the AMZ site has a short article regarding how to do just that. All I needed was a 10K Pot, 330pf Capacitor and a spare single coil pickup I had laying around in my guitar parts box. I built it in an electrical box that cost about 2 bucks and added the input and output jacks. The result is the Impedance Machine!

With Re-Guitar, you can emulate many kinds of guitar tones (electric or acoustic), regardless of the guitar model used for recording: keep playing your own guitar and get all the sounds that you like, and more!

The built-in pickup simulator lets you emulate many types of electric guitar pickups without the need to modify your favorite instrument: choose from a selection of popular guitar pickups or create your own.

"Does it really make a Les Paul sound like a Strat? Well...no, because it can't change your guitar's body, scale length, fingerboard, fret material, and the like. But what it can do is nail the correct vibe. If you've recorded a Les Paul track and wish you had used a Strat instead, Re-Guitar will do the job for you with a couple of clicks, instead of having to re-record the part. All but the most discerning listeners won't be able to tell the difference." - Craig Anderton - [Read full review].

"The tone possibilities are basically endless. This could replace hours of work trying to find ideal pickups for a recording or tweaking gain and EQ trying to change the tone of the guitars you have available. This plugin feels like having 50+ years worth of guitar history right at your fingertips." - Audio Geek 11 - [full review].

" This might be one of those rare things that comes along and becomes a complete game changer for me. It completely exceeded my expectations.[...] This is hands down the most convincing thing I've ever heard for acoustic tones. [...] It sounds better than a lot of acoustic guitars I've heard! [...] Pickup emulations: really, really, really useful tones for any situation I can think of in there.[...] @Blue Cat Audio Well done!" - metropolis_4 on The Gear Page - [full review].

Sometimes I need to demo some apps that are location based. I like using my laptop and want to use if for the demo. I know I can change the location of simulator to not point to California, but is there a way to have cllocationmanager pickup actual location of the laptop?

The software is freeware ver 2.2.

When I press the button and change the rotation speed, it is displayed on the LCD, but the output does not change why.

The pulse width of the output pin and the pulse width remain about 16 ms.

There is no problem with the polarity selection of the pickup, and it can be checked with the oscilloscope that the waveform also has the polarity selected.

Thank you for your reply.

I verified ver 2.3.

The interval between the waveform and the waveform has now changed, but there is still a problem.

Waveform generation timing is later than specification.

The faster it gets faster, the greater the deviation.

I uploaded an additional snapshot.

Hi, output connected or not? Tell everything pls.

Output on air, the range is the same as the range of the power supply.

If powered by +18Vdc and -18Vdc the output is around the same.

I am interested in reading the angle advance , i need to know how the negative voltage is generated to provide the negative reference to the DAC , and also it generatres a single pulse per RPM , can it generate double pulse ,in case of Toothed flywheel.

Hi tierry

It seems that the LCD is bad because the letters come out in half and it has been solved.

But now I have another question how should I connect the oscilloscope because the output has a single cable and the mass of the oscilloscope where I connect it.

Thank you

L1 - 1 Henry Inductor

In a guitar pickup, the inductor converts the vibration of the strings into an electrical current. There are no vibrating strings in our emulator, but we use an inductor to recreate the pickup's phase and frequency non-linearities. In conjunction with the capacitor and resistors, the inductor creates a resonant low-pass filter.

This pedal allows you to use a buffer-sensitive fuzz anywhere in your signal chain. It simulates the impedance of a set of pickups, and when inserted right before the fuzz, it allows the fuzz to operate as if it was connected to your pickups, instead of having the fuzz ruined by buffered circuits before it in the chain. It provides two separate loops which allows you to use different settings for two different fuzz pedals.
