Mylaptop (inspiron 17r 5720, a little over month old with windows 8 pre-installed) has been starting up, showing the dell logo and then gets hung up on a black screen. I'm asuming it has the no boot issue, a solution to which is helpfully provided by Dell here ( =595574) but the problem with this solution is, if the computer isn't starting up properly there's no way to access the boot menu or bios since the advanced startup options menu is accessible only if one can get to the login screen or the start screen, which obviously isn't happening if I'm getting hung up on the black screen of death. There's no option to access it on startup since the F2 and F8 keys don't work with windows 8 apparently due to the new improved super fast start up speed. The advanced startup options menu is allegedly supposed to appear if windows fails startup twice, but that hasn't happened for me.

FYI:

The F12 key does work. Boot mode is set to UEFI and secure boot is on. The only option I can highlight and get into is 'diagnostics'. (I've run the normal and advanced diagnostics tests. Repeatedly. My computer has passed every time.) I can't boot from a cd or USB drive because those options are accessible via the advanced startup menu. That I cannot get in to. For reasons previously stated.

I've disconnected all external devices from the laptop.

I've tried removing the battery and unplugging the power. And holding down the power button for 30 seconds.

I've even (unnecessarily) reseated the hard drive and memory.

I've been scouring forums and this is a known issue that apparently has no solution. I don't know what else to try now. I need to get into my computer, all my college work is saved there and some of it is due tomorrow. I've been trying to fix this thing for the past couple of days and I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with windows 8.

Hi @Mickey82!

Just followed your guide and now i can see the SD Card as a bootable option, but even with a live made with LiLi USB Creator i'm not able to boot from the SD Card, i get an error and the PC start scanning for hardware issues restarting the PC afterwards, what else did you do to make it work?

In your BIOS,, go to System Configuration/Miscellaneous Devices and enable "Secure Digital (SD) Card Boot". Save and Reboot. Done. I did installs in both Legacy mode and UEFI, Secure Boot enabled and disabled and all three times it works just perfect.

On a side note, Installs on a standard SD seems a bit sluggish, guessing that's due to SD speeds. So I bought a SDHC 32Gb card, did a clean install and let Linux decide partitioning. The system booting and running of the SD seems as responsive as a Mechanical HDD, so I'm quite happy with it. My Windows install on the NVMe was left intact, no changes to boot settings which I'm quite happy with. Boot order is set to SD card first and I'll use F12 for booting to Windows. Your choices obviously may differ.

I've given up on running Windows10 on this #3452 with a 32GB drive, but I cannot figure out how to boot to a USB drive with Linux Mint on it (created with PenDrive Universal USB Installer). There is no option after pressing F12 for Boot Options to boot to the USB drive. Computer does use a USB mouse, so I know that USB is working.

Like 2 weeks ago I had the same problem. You need to turn of secure boot, need to change UEFI to Legacy boot option in BIOS. After that you can boot from USB and make everything working. There are some problems with instaling GRUB for dualboot, but its quite advanced and depends on your configuration - I had intel raid switched on and had to change in BIOS to boot from xhci ... but go step by step and let us know the progress.

Many thanks for the information. At this point, I will be trying Linux Mint Cinnamon just to see if it can recognize the track pad and wireless card. If it works, I'll wipe the drive and install Linux, but not before. FYI - as far as I can tell, Linux Mint does support UEFI. Wish me luck !

Thank you for the BIOS/Setup information. I was able to boot to the USB drive, but Lubuntu would only boot to a black blank screen. Booted again with Linux Mint Cinnamon v19 on the USB drive and that worked and did recognize the USB mouse and WiFi worked fine with no histrionics. Will not bother with a dual-boot setup as disk space is a major issue. Need to try a full install next. Fingers crossed.

I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon v19 from USB and am stuck with a new problem now. All I get is a No Bootable Devices message with options for F1, F2 or F5. It appears that the default install has deleted all partitions on the internal eMMC drive and put Mint on it. Is this where it went wrong, or is there some way to repair this now? It does appear that the Mint folders exist on the drive, just something missing to let it boot.

The new Dell XPS 8950 will not boot from USB. I have just received my new XPS 8950 and want to do a clean Windows 11 install to a new M.2 NVME drive. However, it does not seem to be possible to boot from a USB flash drive containing the Windows 11 setup media. The Windows 11 USB drive was created using the Windows 11 media creation tool from Microsoft. I have tested it in a different PC to ensure there are no issues with it.

When I press F12 for boot options upon bootup, I am able to see the bootable USB drive. When I select it, all I get is a black screen. I have attempted to disable secure boot and updated by BIOS to v1.0.8 (Latest at time of writing) and I also tried all of the different USB ports to no avail.

I purchased this PC with a 1TB HDD knowing that I would reinstall Windows on a much faster NVME drive. However, as I am not able to bootup to the USB Windows 11 installation media, I cannot install windows to my new fast M.2 NVME drive.

I contacted support today and they had me run diagnostics which reported the hardware was healthy. Then they proceeded to transfer me to software support who advised me that there would be a $99 charge to assist me with my issue. Really Dell? If I cannot get this issue resolved soon, I will be looking to return the PC as it is unacceptable to not be able to boot from USB media.

Thanks for your reply. I solved the issue by connecting my monitor directly to the onboard display port. When the monitor was previously connected to the installed RTX 3080, the display would go blank right after starting to boot from the USB Win 11 installation media. I tried HDMI and DP and had the same issue. Using the onboard graphics DP port, I was able to install windows to an m.2 nvme ssd. I did have to switch to AHCI mode for the drive to show up in the win 11 install. After successfully installing windows and adding the nvidia drivers, I was able to move the monitor back to the RTX 3080 and everything is working.

how long did you wait? also does your USB drive have a flashing light suggesting the pc is reading/loading installation file from the usb? if there is a steady and not flashing light on usb then I would agree pc is not accessing boot file on usb. I assume you have usb wired keyboard and mouse connected to pc which attest that the ports are not disabled.

sometimes it does take a few minutes of black screen before screen shows Win 11 logo. It depends on how fast the pc loads installation file from usb. so if you have a usb that has a power led it would be very helpful to know whether pc is actually reading from usb or not during black screen time.

When I first received my 8940 I ran into the same problem because I was going to do a clean install too. After all the frustration I decided to do a clean install in AHCI mode (RAID is default on Dell) and had no problem.

During my troubleshooting, I did try a using Rufus and experienced the same issue with the screen going blank right after saying "Launching 'efi\boot\bootx64.efi'...". This was only happening when I had my monitor connected to my graphics card. Issue was resolved by using the onboard graphics for the installation.

I wonder if, sooner/later, a similar vBIOS update will be offered for these same GPU cards when installed in the XPS 8950. Caution: Do NOT try to install that update on your GPU. Wait and see if it's eventually offered specifically for the XPS 8950 too...

My 8950 only have one slot on the rear of the PC that could allow me to connect to my monitor via an HDMI cable. Do I have to open the PC case to connect the HDMI cable some there inside? If so, could you post a screen shot on where the connection inside your XPS 8950 is?

You have to open BIOS setup by tapping F2 when you power the PC on. When BIOS setup opens, look for the option to Enable Boot Support and enable it. Save the change and exit setup. When it gets to the desktop, shut down normally (not a Restart).

Hello everybody. After a few days of scouring the Internet (and these forums in particular), I still cannot get my PowerEdge 2650 to boot from a CD. Hoping theflash1932 will drop by, s/he seems very knowledgeable.. ;)

Full disclosure: I've been given 3 Dell Poweredge2650s to try and bring back from the dead. They were all scored second-hand, so they may not be in any sort of running shape, but so far I can't even get them to boot from a CD. I have never worked with servers before, but I have pretty extensive knowledge of PC building and repair. I have tried to boot two out of the three 2650s with a plethora of CDs: a legit Windows Server 2003 CD, the Dell SBUU, a Linux Live CD, a Sardu Disk.. nothin'. With each server, I hot-swapped out the CD-ROM/Floppy combo with the others, so a total of three different CD-ROM/Floppy combos have been tried on two of the servers.

I find it highly unlikely that all three of these drive combos are dead. They light up during boot, so I know they're getting power, but I still find myself getting the "No bootable device" error on boot after successful BIOS installation. I have ensured that the CD-ROM drive is present, selected, and first in the boot device order. I have tried with OS Install mode On and Off, and in the RAID configuration utility there is an option for CD-ROM Boot that is disabled by default that I have also tried enabling and disabling again.
