Dashavtar 2: A Movie Review
Dashavtar 2 is a 2023 Indian science fiction action film directed by K.S. Ravikumar and written by Kamal Haasan, who also stars in ten distinct roles. The film is a sequel to the 2008 blockbuster Dasavathaaram, which depicted the chaos theory and the butterfly effect through the lives of ten characters across different time periods and locations. The sequel follows the same format, but with a different theme and plot.
The Plot
The film begins with a flashback to the 12th century Chidambaram, where Rangaraja Nambi, a Vaishnavite priest, was executed by the Chola king Kulothunga II for protecting a Vishnu idol from destruction. The idol was submerged into the sea along with Nambi, who cursed the king and his descendants before dying. The film then shifts to the present day, where Govindarajan Ramaswamy, a geneticist who works for a US-based company called BEAGLE II, is on the run from a CIA agent named Chris Fletcher, who wants to retrieve a vial containing a deadly virus that Govind accidentally stole from his corrupt boss. The vial reaches India through a courier service, and Govind follows it to prevent a potential disaster. Along the way, he meets various people who are somehow connected to his past lives or the Vishnu idol, such as Kothai, a devout woman who resembles Nambi's wife; Ranjitha Kaur, an ex-CIA agent who helps Govind; Jasmine, a killer hired by Fletcher; Pranab Kundu, a RAW officer who suspects Govind; Sai Ram, a martial arts expert from Tokyo; Avatar Singh, a Sikh pop singer; Sheikh Mukhtaar, a Muslim leader; and Kodhai Ramanuja Nambi, a young boy who is the reincarnation of Nambi. The film culminates in a climax where all the characters converge at the shore of Tamil Nadu, where the Vishnu idol resurfaces after being triggered by an earthquake and a tsunami. The idol emits a powerful energy that neutralizes the virus and saves the world from a pandemic. Govind realizes that he is also an avatar of Vishnu, and that his actions were part of a divine plan to restore balance in the world.
The Review
Dashavtar 2 is an ambitious and spectacular film that showcases Kamal Haasan's versatility and creativity as an actor and a writer. He plays ten different roles with ease and conviction, giving each character a distinct personality and appearance. The film is also a visual treat, with stunning special effects and cinematography that capture the various settings and scenarios of the story. The film has a fast-paced and engaging plot that keeps the audience hooked till the end. The film also has a strong message of unity and harmony among different religions and cultures, as well as a commentary on the ethical issues of biotechnology and terrorism. The film has some flaws, such as some logical loopholes, excessive violence, and melodrama, but they are overshadowed by the overall brilliance of the film. The film also has some memorable songs composed by Himesh Reshammiya and Devi Sri Prasad , such as "Ulaga Nayagan", "Mukundha Mukundha", and "Oh Sanam Ho Sanam".
