Because I'm required to install windows updates on 2012 before having vmware tools be able to update, I am blocked from using the vmware tools network driver to install windows updates. Using the vm is extremely cumbersome. This means the whole process takes over an hour.

This is a REALLY bad decision to not make vmware tools contain the Visual C++ executables. I realize there may be some newer features in tools that take advantage of advanced windows features, but a KEY point of vmware is being able to support older operating systems on new hardware.

I haven't checked Event Viewer because I'm so darn new to Windows server I didn't think about it. Come from Unix/Linux background. I'll go check. Is there any place in particular that VMware tools would be located within Event Viewer?

I have a Windows 2008 R2 X64 server running on Vmware ESXi. Originally it was running on Hyper-V, but I have since converted the VHD to a VMDK and migrated to ESXi. I also installed VMware Tools. This server is our TeamCity continuous integration server, performing nightly builds of software packages that my company develops. Since the move, occasionally certain files that the build process should delete fail to delete due to "The file is in use by another process". We are trying to delete the files using the CMD del command. Sometimes it works, others not. I fired up process monitor with the path of the directory where failures occur as the PATH filter (PATH contains C:\work ). I see a LOT of vmtoolsd.exe Createfile, FileSystemControl, and CloseFile operations occurring in quick succession, repeatedly. Has anyone heard of Vmware tools causing filesystem locks on Windows guests?

I don't think so, the snapshot works with VMware tools version 9354 e doens not works with version 10272...Other think you cannot create snapshot from vmware console, for me it can be a vmware problem, probably with vmware tools version. have you opportunity to check these articles

I actually got it figured out. I never saw the answer anywhere, but after some trial and error, I found that it is working correctly, but you have to wait for Windows to setup and vmware tools to install. Also, you need to make sure vmware tools gets installed in the Specialize pass of the autounattend. That way it will reboot before doing the other stuff. Once it reboots after vmware tools, it gets an IP and you will find the packer process starts moving again.

There are many topics related to the windows/winrm/waiting for ip problem(s). Most of the time the machines had to be rebooted (typical Windows problem solving) one or two times for getting vmware tools/ winrm up and running.

But the vmware-hgfsmounter function is not available using the official vmware-tools from VMware that ships with the current VMware player. Therefore, as the currently accepted answer suggests, running the vmware-config-tools.pl -d fixes the problem.

(applies to Mac VMware Fusion and Ubuntu file sharing)When you are asked in vmware-config-tools.pl about whether you want HGFS, say yes! (The default is 'no' and you may have skipped over it when hitting enter). This should give you /mnt/hgfs after the tools are installed.

A workaround for this problem is to edit 'inode.c' and change the line '888' to remove 'compat_truncate' function call (that is responsible for this problem on kernels 3.8.x). This file is inside 'vmware-tools-distrib', so you need to perform the following steps:

Good morning,
I have never install vmware on server 2012.I need this because I would like to install TimeIPS clocking system virtual machine on my server 2012 which will be the host system.Do you have any idea how that will work?

And replace them by:
Create with PowerShell an ISO for Windows server 2016 unattended installation including VMware tools.
Use PowerCLI to configure the VM.
Use PowerCLI to configure the OS with invoke-vmscript via the VMware tools.

4) Identify the URL of the VMware tools ISO matching the version to be installed in Windows.
Index of all VMware tools
For example the URL for 6.5 now is:
-tools-windows-10.1.0-4449150.iso
