Bishop Tobin: Catholics should not support LGBTQ 'Pride Month'

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Rhode Island's Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin
is making his position on "Pride Month" known loud and clear.

The leader of the Providence Diocese took to twitter Saturday, writing, "A
reminder that Catholics should not support or attend LGBTQ “Pride Month”
events held in June. They promote a culture and encourage activities that
are contrary to Catholic faith and morals. They are especially harmful for
children."

Within hours, Tobin's tweet was trending on Twitter with thousands of
retweets and comments.

Joe Lazzerini, the president of Rhode Island Pride, says he immediately
wondered "why" after seeing what many have called a divisive tweet by the
church leader.

"There are Catholics all across Rhode Island who support the LGBTQIA plus
community and I honestly think that it's shameful that Bishop Tobin is
resorting to these attacks on the first day of pride month, on the 50th
anniversary of Stonewall," Lazzerini said.

Events will be happening throughout the entire month celebrating Pride.

"Pride isn't harmful, love is not harmful, it's 2019," Lazzarini said.

Rhode Island Pride says it plans to hold a rally in Cathedral Square in
Providence Sunday at 6:30 p.m. in response to Tobin's tweet.

Eyewitness News reached out to a church spokesperson for further comment or
an interview with Bishop Tobin but is yet to hear back.

So what?
Catholics also should not promote a culture that supports murder,
arson, abortion, euthanasia, or the KKK.
Makes sense to me.
