The “Man of Steel’s” Five-Year Plan and subsequent “Revolution from
Above”

Directions:
Now that you have become fully aware of what Josef Stalin’s Five Year
Plans actually consisted of and how they were carried out, it’s time
to decide if such ruthlessness, negative consequences on the economy,
and the millions of lives lost were necessary to achieve the results
he desired: An all-out industrialization at the expense of the toiling
masses to make sure that the USSR no longer lags behind compared to
its neighbors.
Specifically Stalin thought Russia’s “backwardness” had to be
addressed in the following areas: military backwardness, cultural
backwardness, political backwardness, industrial backwardness, and
finally agricultural backwardness. As you are now aware, Stalin
addressed these various issues in many different ways, however, the
totalitarian nature with which he conducted himself is more legendary
than the actual results within the USSR.
Your job is to implement a Five-Year Plan in the USSR not run by Josef
Stalin, but Leon Trotsky (Yes, the same Trotsky that Stalin had
tracked down in Mexico City and fractured his skull with a pickaxe!).
Remember, Trotsky was considered to be an “Old Bolshevik” with dreams
of a Soviet Union that more represented Marx’s and Lenin’s views on
Communism. Good luck!
