Pakistan questions (Aish, Bridget, and Kevin):
It has been reported that up to 70% of US aid has been misspent on
things like building a new house for the Pakistani Army's general.
What is the US doing to correct this, and if it is not actively
pursuing this cause, why not? How can we ensure that the aid gets to
where it needs to go without getting rerouted to the Taliban or Al
Qaeda?
Why are we spending only $1 in Pakistan to every $30 in Afghanistan,
when multiple studies have shown that Pakistan is the real
headquarters of terrorist factions?
How long are we going to continue giving aid to Pakistan? After all,
we are providing the Pakistani citizens with aid, but they are still
resentful of it. Could the same ends be achieved by distributing aid
through (non-religiously affiliated) NGO's?
Pakistan and India have been rivals for decades; how does this rivalry
affect Pakistan's attempts to deal with Al Qaeda and the Taliban as
well as the US? How can we prevent war from breaking out, and if it
did, would India (the world's most populous democracy) receive any aid
from the US? How would this affect our relations with Pakistan?
What is the current relationship between Pakistan and America like and
how it affecting our current goals in Pakistan?
How secure are Pakistan's nuclear weapons? Much of Pakistan's defense
of nuclear weapons depends on its military, which can be vulnerable to
extremist infiltration. How can we make sure that these weapons are
safe? What can we do to encourage Pakistan to reduce or eliminate its
stockpile of nuclear weapons (if this is even possible)?
Many Pakistani civilians are frustrated by the United States' drone
attacks which have led to the deaths of many civilians because they
view it as a breach of national sovereignty. How can we fight the
Taliban while killing fewer civilians?
Thank you.
