Besides Stan, who makes Boom Rooms? Any sources for good used ones?

Ron;

"Back in the day", it was considered "treasonous" for anyone on the list to
consider buying anything that Stan made or sold from anybody else. The idea
was that keeping Stan in business was good for all of us whether or not we
could save a dollar here or there on a given item. There has been discussion
on this subject over the years (even the few years that I have been here).
and I do think there is merit in the idea.

I will tell you nonetheless that I did buy a boat cover from Art Czerwonky
(Stan doesn't make or sell those) who is a list member (cover-man at
comcast.net) with which I was quite satisfied. My recollection is that Art
had some kind of arrangement with Stan (for a while at least) and boom-rooms
may have been part of it.

You will have to talk to Stan or Art or both and examine your own conscience
to decide what to do, but
whatever you do BE CAREFUL. ;>)

I don't want to upset Stan! Really I don't. He is a great guy and has done
so much for all of us. I was thinking about looking at used ones more than
anything else. I may have to save up my pennies for awhile and get one from
Stan. I do want to support GB. We need to help him as much as we can.

Is there a secret code to get Stan to answer your request to purchase something? He never answers my email or takes my phone calls. I have only been courteous and am willing to spend money, but to no avail.

When we picked up our boat from Stan in January we were told they haven't
been making Boom Rooms for a few years, so we are thinking of looking for
someone around here (Seattle) who can make one.

Ron,In that case you should check with Stan first and if he no longer offers the Boom Room then you can find one elsewhere. That's what I did. Stan at the time (this was several years ago) said that he no longer had a good source for Boom Rooms. BK

Good News,

Be advised that Stan requires a 5% homage to be paid to him on all Rhodes
22 transactions (sales between private owners) or he will not acknowledge
your existence. He also has a disdain for early model Rhodes that were built
by subcontractors before he got the company on a sound enough footing to
build them in house. I fear you are beating your head against a wall trying
to give him business. Aside from the IMF there is nothing on a Rhodes 22
that can't be bought by other suppliers. That includes the trailer as I have
rebuilt mine from other sources and it is built to spec. What are you
looking for ? If I can help I will.

Last year I got Stan to sell me a used motor lift (manual). He sent it after 3. Months of saying he would see what he could find. It arrived without payment or bill when I call to ask cost he said see if it fits first. He emailed a bill about 6 months later. I figured what's good for the goose is good for the gander. I sent payment about 5 months later

Do not understand, are we saying that Stan is not fair< he almost went
out of business--what other manufacturer treats his customers with so
much great customer service--the 5% is a very fair price for the
servicethat he gives--he is a rather small operation

I have a 1983 model. Was this one subcontracted out?
I wouldnt mind paying the fee. He should be professional enough to reply and ask for the money though. I fear the end of the Rhodes will come if he doesnt offer support to older boat owners....sad.

You have absolutely no idea of the ridiculous conversations which have been posted here on the list about General Boats, Stan, and why he is entitled to royalities on everything being sold, made, shared, etc. here which has anything to do with a Rhodes 22. Search the archives looking for certificate of support.

Believe me when I say this, because I was once the biggest complainer. He sells boats and not parts, so you are better off making it yourself or adapting an off-the-shelf part to work. If He does take the time (away from his boatbuilding) to rummage around the yard to send a part to you; having not bought your boat from; consider yourself lucky and respond graciously. (or at least stop complaining)

John S used the correct word too. "homage". Too too funny

I want to thank everyone for your replies. The photos have been very
helpful. I have spoken with Stan several times and I agree that he is very
fair with people and he has always answered my questions. I have been
trying to get some time to go down and visit him, but work had been so
impossibly busy I haven't been able to work in some time to get down there
and spend some quality time with him.

I want to support Stan, because of what he has been doing for all of us.

Ron

I have sent meaningful replies off-list for any questions. I appreciate the two-way loyalty from the skippers I have worked with over many years.

In my experience, buying from Stan pays back more in friendship , advice, expertise and in knowing I've done my part to help his business than the little bit I might save buying elsewhere.

I agree with Todd,
At this stage of life Stan is giving everything he
can to keep the new boat and refurbish part of the business going. Give the
guy a break. There are so many great and experienced Rhodies on this list
that among us we probably have fabricated or sourced almost every component
on a Rhodes. Sure there are some things like the hull, deck and rudder,
motor lift, centerboard and IMF that are uniquely Stan's and available
nowhere else. I would suggest that you go ahead and offer to make your
purchases from Stan on any of the larger ticket items (either new or used)
and just let him know to respond in a reasonable time frame if he is
interested in filling the order. If is able, interested and has the time he
he'll to get back to you. If after that deadline, then communicate with the
list and we can come up with a solution most likely. Most of us imagine
ourselves retiring at 60 or 65; this guy is still working 25 years after we
would be playing shuffle board! (Ok Rhodies don't play shuffle board we
sail our boats)
