Well, I got it home last night and this afternoon I looked over it a
little more. I attached some pics below.

The hull itselft seems pretty solid, the transom seems to be dry (at least
the bottom where the plug goes, was poking around and it was solid and dry)
The rest of the boat is a different story. After pulling a panel off I got
access to under the cockpit, the floor supports are completely rotten as
you can see in the pic. After pulling out some screws I found that the deck
above the cabin seems to be rotten in between the glass as well, as is the
gunwalls on the sides of the cockpit. I found a hole that I assume was
used for an atenna cable on the top of the cockpit, I couldn't even find
any wood in between the layers there, I'm guessing it's all rotted away.

In the lazarette there is a raised "shelf?" incased in fiberglass on each
side of the compartment. I assume this is structural?, or part of the foam?
Anyways, someone at some point screwed a small eye bolt through it on the
side. I pulled it out and out came water :-(. So whatever is in there is
filled with water, I'm guessing wood. The interior is completely shot
(looks like it's been chaged a few times), but I knew that and was planning
a full rebuild of the inside.

So it looks like this boat isn't going to see the water, or any more of my
money. The good part is that I only paid $600 for everything, that's why I
wasn't real concerned if it was too far gone, and I figure the trailer
should be worth half that, good solid trailer just needs some TLC. The main
sail is useable but could use a cleaning and the jib looks pretty clean,
and all the rigging seems to be there and in decent shape. So who knows
where I'll go from here, I woundn't mind spending time and money on it, but
it seems like the problems I found are beyond repair.

I attached a few pics below.

Bummer on the boat's condition. :-(

So are you thinking of parting her out? If so... I'll make a bid on the
stern rail.... if you are close enough for me to drive...

Let me know of list if that works for you...

Rob,

Parting it out is definately an option, there are plenty of good parts on
the boat and I could probably make my money back pretty easily.

Like I said I'm not quite sure yet what I'm going to do. I think tomarrow
I'm gonna drill a few holes through the bottom layer of the deck to get a
better idea of how bad it is. I know there are ways to fix this, but if the
whole deck is rotted I would prolly be better off finding another boat.

Maybe a dumb question, but is there wood in the Hull, or is that made
differently than the deck. I come from small motorboats so the build and
design is completely different than what I'm used to.

My first thought was to encourage you to fix it as all of those problems are repairable.....but....if you want to sail next winter i would part it out. The hulls were solid, but the deck is cored. It can be fixed by removing the deck and separating the top and bottom fiberglass layers and rebonding pt plywood back in as a core. I.e. Lots of work, glassing, and sanding! Yuk! The floor is easy to glass in new stringers and replacing the floor.
Another option is look for another rhodes esp one with a good deck and a busted hull.
If you part it out i want a chance to buy the sliding hatch lid/ pop top.

Austin,
Yeah, looks a bit bleak. Your 0002 attachment shows the bulkhead and compression post. Someone has rebult that at one time and it looks like the post is undersized and has dropped. Probably the floor under is could be rotted out? Not sure what you have in it, but parting out might be considered. Don't recall seeing one in this bad a shape. Good luck! - rob

Austin and I are talking about his stern rail. I'm in Virginia. Maybe we
could work out something where I pick up the mast as well and get it part
way to you and we can cost share the gas expense. I'm heading to PA in
July anyway so... if we coordinate ....?

I'm two hours north of Greensboro.

My '79 Rhodes came that way too. I thought it was the only one.
Apparently the previous owner got tired of dealing with leaky ports and
and excess cabin heat, so just glassed them in. I bought two new ports
to put them BACK in! Haven't done that yet, but it's on the list.

The newer R22's have two hatches - one on either side of the mast.  Better light and ventilation, plus less leak likelihood if installed properly.

If one keeps those bucket-like front ports covered with the GBI snap-on covers, the water stays out of them. Is that an option or standard?  My recycled '87 came with them.  They make me happy.  Not as happy as well crafted beer or any quality sex (and of course, the list is much longer) but happy is happy.  And, that is a commodity we can't just disregard because it seems insignificant. It's like sailing in crappy wind; you're sailing, dammit, so shut up and enjoy!

Joe,

They help some, but still expect some water. No problem of dumping into the cabin if you just expect water, and just use an absorbent swab to soak it up before opening. Also suggested is some Vaseline or similar product to help keep the gasket sealing effective while they are closed.

Our original R22, an '86, had the opening ports, and yes, the covers did a good job of keeping the water out.

Someone will want the hull. Especially after you have removed all of the
"old and broken" stuff and removed the deck, bulkheads and interior
structures.

Pressure wash and clean it up a bit and you can advertise it as "stripped,
cleaned and ready for restoration". You could probably get $200 for it.
You never know. It may be just what someone is looking for.

I have to disagree on this one. We have a single cabintop hatch added
when Fretless was recycled in 1998. It gives a nice flow of air
through the cabin but when we put up the poptop enclosure which we do
most nights at anchor to keep the mosquitoes at bay, we are grateful
for the two screened opening ports which are not covered up by the
poptop enclosure.

"hardwareless" form. I'll prolly give it a week or two on craigslist (free
add) and haul it to the landfill if it's still here. I can't stand junk
laying around and this now qualifies as junk :-(.

Do you have a GB boarding ladder that you would part with? Check the foot print measurements, please. Also how much. A fishing friend would like to put one on his fishing boat.
Thanks ,

Hi,

All I have is a single step/ rung mounted to the transom. It looks
original, good shape. If that's what your talking about I'll get some
measurements for you.

Thanks,
Austin

It sounds like you may have just a portion of the GB boarding ladder. If you Re near your boat take a picture and send it to me, along with the bolt hole measurements. Thanks

Thanks,
It is not what I need.
FYI note the newer stern rails are mounted on the side of the deck cap, more out of the way with more room to sit on the rail

ROd 198$, oops there is a typo.

Rod,

I do not know when the rails were changed to mount on the outside of the dech flange, but I have never been able to find anything on-line comparable. My guess is that they are custom made.

I'm not shopping, but had noticed the '70s style stern rail.My '87 has the side mounted ones, I like to sit on the gunwale. When Stan did his magic on out boat I wanted the captains seats added and with them would come the newer open ladder style rail. I had spent my limit so didn't get the captains seats. They sure look cool. In my post I had noticed the '70's boat had the top mounted stern rails, I had never seen that style before.

1985 Rhodes 22 w/trailer
for Sale (Lake Lanier, GA)

Hi Everyone,

I hope it is OK to post this—I’m a little out of the loop on
current Rhodes listserv etiquette. We have our
1985 Rhodes 22 “Orion” for sale. While not out
playing on the lake, she has been kept on her trailer in a dry slip at Lake Lanier, GA since we purchased her in 2007. She was refurbished by General Boats in (approx)
2000 by the former owner.

Our family crew has been expanding and we have another
crewmember on the way in July, so we’ve moved up to a larger boat. We are
selling her ‘as is’ and all reasonable offers will be considered. Her hull and
sails are in good shape, as is much of her interior. But, her status ‘as is’ is
due to some Georgia mice that thought she’d make a nice home last winter (lovely). Therefore, due
to their ‘tenancy’ she may need a new cabin sole and some interior wood work
replaced due to the ‘eau de mouse’ that is present when the boat is closed up.

Here is what she comes with:

In-mast furling

Mast hoist system from General Boats

Tohatsu 8.0 HP motor- new in 2008

1985 Trailmaster trailer with tongue extension: upgraded in
2009 with hydraulic brakes and new tires.

Boat cushions- these have been steam cleaned since the
rodentia tenancy and are in great condition, with the
exception of one v-berth cushion that has a 1 foot diameter chunk taken out of
the front by our mice tenants.

New galley counter top and sink—replaced in 2008

New jib sheets – 2008

New Bimini cover – 2008 (will need to be repaired- the mouse
tenants tore a hole in one part of the bimini- the rest of the bimini is fine).

Orion comes with a number of extras—winch handles, PFDs, two
new Lewmar winches still in the boxes (not yet installed), dock lines, etc.

Pictures available upon request. For more information,
please contact me via email at kelu...@yahoo.com

Many thanks,

Kris
