English for Action
Job Description for ESOL Assistant Facilitator
Philosophy
English for Action's educational model links language learning with
empowerment. EFA's participatory philosophy drives both its
organizational structure and its teaching methodologies. At EFA,
facilitators and learners are equal partners in the classroom, working
collaboratively to develop curriculum that reflect the learners'
priorities. Rather than taking our curriculum out of a grammar
textbook, we base our lesson plans in relevant social issues and
learners' life experiences. As a result, we empower learners with the
skills, strategies, and confidence to advocate for themselves and
their communities, in English.
Programs
English for Action has six adult ESOL (English for Speakers of Other
Languages) classes. Most of our classes are organized by language
level: we have four different levels, from Beginner to Advanced. In
addition to these classes, we have a Native Language Literacy class
for learners with limited literacy in Spanish.
ESOL Assistant Facilitators attend an all-day ESOL Facilitator
training each semester.
They begin the semester by observing a participatory, popular
education based ESOL class every week, and work with co-facilitators
to create curriculum and address challenges in the classroom.
As the semester progresses, Assistant Facilitators become more active
in the classroom, leading and facilitating activities. Once the
Assistant Facilitator feels comfortable in EFA's unique ESOL
classrooms, they may begin to lead lessons and classes on their own.
ESOL Assistant Facilitators will ideally be ESOL Facilitators after
one semester of work at EFA. They use their first semester in our
organization as a semester long training process, to become better
prepared to be an ESOL facilitator.
ESOL Assistant Facilitator Responsibilities:
-- Observe and help facilitate a class of adult English learners one
or two evenings per week from 6:30-8:30pm. Classes run Mon-Thurs.
-- Learn how to prepare lesson plans and curriculum by working with co-
facilitators in their planning of participatory ESOL classes.

--Attend monthly facilitator trainings on Fridays from 5-7pm.
--Attend a mid-semester retreat.
-- Help organize and participate in grassroots fundraising efforts and

Applicants should be proficient in Spanish, and have enthusiasm for

required, but a plus. Applicants must be able to commit to working at
least 6 hours a week.
