Hi Everyone,

Apologies for any duplication, but in case you haven’t yet heard, Peter Nightingale, my good friend and fellow member of Fossil Free RI, was arrested this morning (along with Curt Nordgaard, an MD from Massachusetts) for blockading the entrance to the Burrillville fracked-gas compressor station to halt construction there.  They were taken away in an ambulance, but are not injured and are now in police custody.

Peter and Curt have put their bodies on the line to do what our government has failed to do:  to protect us all from the reckless expansion of fossil fuels and the threat of catastrophic global warming.  But, to have a real impact, these actions must be widely publicized.  Please help us spread the word in any way you can—e.g., by sharing this meme on Facebook:

and this article in RI Future:  http://www.rifuture.org/activists-arrested-in-burrillville-for-protesting-gas-expansion-project.html

You can also check the FANG (Fighting Against Natural Gas) Facebook page for updates, and share any media reports posted there:   https://www.facebook.com/FANGtogether?fref=ts

You can sign FANG’s Pledge of Resistance here:

http://www.fangtogether.org/pledge

To sign the Pledge, you don’t have to be willing to risk arrest; you can also pledge to stay informed, inform others, or support future direct actions.

Finally, if you’re able, please consider making a donation to support non-violent direct actions such as this one:   https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/support-the-movement-to-stopspectra#/story

Thanks for all that you do!  We’re all in this together, and it will take all of us to stop fossil fuel expansion.

Best,

Lisa

P.S.  RI folks, here’s another local fracked-gas project that must be stopped:  an LNG production facility has been proposed for the Providence Waterfront, right next to a hazardous chemical facility.  Two-thirds of Rhode Island’s children go to school within the hazard radius of this facility.  Imagine what could happen if the LNG facility exploded.  Please come to the meeting tonight to show your support for the community in fighting this project:

P.P.S.  Mark your calendars:  RI folks will be fasting next month in solidarity with the group Beyond Extreme Energy (BXE) to call on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to halt new permits for fracked-gas infrastructure:

http://beyondextremeenergy.org/september-fast-at-ferc-for-no-new-permits/  Some of the dedicated folks at BXE have committed to a water-only fast for 2-1/2 weeks, from Sept. 8th through Sept. 25th.  A number of us are committing to more limited fasts during the same time frame—e.g., fasting from sunrise to sunset for one or several days.

At the Fossil Free RI meeting last night, we decided to have a peaceful and legal demonstration outside the RI State House on Sept. 24th, the day the Pope will be addressing a joint session of Congress, to call attention to the fast and the need for urgent action to stop the climate crisis and transition away from fossil fuels.  The demonstration will likely take place around 4 pm., and folks are encouraged to bring (non-fasting) children to dramatize what’s at stake in this crisis; more details to come.  Read the powerful testimony from the fasters here:  http://beyondextremeenergy.org/testimony-of-the-fasters/

If you don’t hear more about this by early next month, or if you’d like to be involved in planning it, feel free to contact me, teon...@juno.com, or Peter, ni...@pobox.com.
