HiI've been playing in brush settings all morning and I just held down a few keys (Ctrl+Z I thought) but must have held down something else and now my brush settings control panel is all greyed out and I can't use it.
You did really well providing the screen shot, but it would be more useful if you'd shown the entire workspace. If you can do that I'm sure we can sort it out. Leave it at full res, and show layers panel, an history panel at least. Have the brush tool selected.
I agree with what @Trevor.Dennis said, but just in case, (and to reiterate what Trevor said) make sure you have the brush tool selected when you go into the Brush Settings Panel. Otherwise, yes - everything will be greyed out as you see here. If you hit CTRL+Z, it might be you went back to where you were before you had selected a brush in the first place.
Heh, so I went to look this up, and yes! Have the Brush tool selected. The bad UX here, though, for me came from when I was painting with the clone stamp tool. The brush size in the Paint Window is clickable and it sends you straight to the Brushes Window, BUT, because you're not on the Brush tool the selections are all grayed out and unlickable.
Maybe I'm crazy, but I could SWEAR that in the past whenever I was on the clone stamp (or other similar painting tools) that when I clicked the brush size in those tools and it sent me to the Brushes palette that I was able to then choose the brush sizes without having to be specifically on the Brush tool. Am I just gaslighting myself?
I was recently experimenting with making adjustments to my Paint Brush tool under the "more" tab next to the "hardness" selector. After unsuccessfully creating a new brush, I reset the options. Now the brush tool does absolutely nothing. Doesn't work in masks, doesn't work by simply trying to paint different colors. Ive triple checked everything, opacity is 100%, flow 100%, Hardness adjustments, etc etc.
please help that picture above showing the brushes panel i do not see at all even when i click the brush ... why is that ... it was an issue i had when purchasing the program ... i cant see any option for brush strokes color etc.
I do NOT want to return to the brushes that come with Photoshop or make all the brushes disappear that I downloaded. I want to restore all the brushes that I have now to the settings they had when they first came into Photoshop (i.e. their texture settings, scatter, shape dynamics, etc).
Also, I just tried to follow your instructions, but when I click Window there is only "Brush" not "Brushes," and in the Brush hamburger menu there is not "Restore Original Brushes." There is "Clear Brush Controls" though. Is this the same thing as what you're talking about? I'm using Photoshop CC 2017. (Can't upgrade to 2019 because it makes my tablet lag!)
I'm talking about in either case. The main reason I'm asking this is because I downloaded all of the Kyle brushes and I think, playing around, I changed some of the brushes' settings and now I would like to get them back to normal.
I'm having this same problem as the OP mentioned - I've been using imported brushsets, and the brush settings (shape dynamics, etc) are no longer there. The brushes are no longer the same. I removed them, then re-imported, and the settings are still not as they were in the original brushset (ABR files).
I just lost my default brushes...I cannot find the option anywhere or a place to go and find a file that I can put back in called default. Newest Cloud version of Illustrator installed. I hope someone will answer at some point. If not the community maybe I should do a ticket with the company?
Thank you all!
I solved it by going in and downloading an older version (2.0) of photoshop. This fixed it.
My operating system is a bit older, so it might not be fully compatible with the latest version of PS.
It was super easy to do in the creative cloud - 3 dots next to photoshop and go to older versions.
Thanks guys!
Hi there, I'm having this problem. I've used some Kyle's brushes and now the settings which seem to be some kind of transparency setting seem to be working across all my brushes (my own and default brushes) I've tried reset locked settings but hat hasnt helped. Do you have any possible soloutions I haven't thought of ? Thanks
I always save my brushes tomy external drive in a folder just for brushes. That way you can delete the brush set from Photoshop, and just import the original file again. I do this for all my stuff. I just works for me.
I am super impressed by the level of customization for the app. its incredible. my biggest issue however is i close my scene or close the app and loose every setting i have each time. so ive ended up having to take screenshots of what my settings are.
a straight line tool/brush would be amazing. so many times i just want a straight line. nothing fancy and using standard brushes with the path smoothing helps but its still not as good as a straight line
hey @knacki how does that layer brush work. didnt quite understand it. i use all the brushes with the layers, is the layer brush a special type?. does it just use settings specified in the layer?. maybe thats what that position slider is for?. i tried moving the position slider expecting it to shift a stoke up and down or maybe left and right etc, didnt seem to do anything. Maybe this is a common tool in other sculpting software, im fairly new to sculpting in general, so not sure what it does.

I actually use my default brush setting which is the one above!!! My sketch tool is just the pen tool lolol, and I only tweak it ever so slightly if I want different lines. All my other brush settings can be found HERE by the way! Thanks for the message :^)
hi i love the effect your lines have !! would you mind telling us your current brush settings? i checked the faq but it says they need updating and i feel you use less pressure sensitivity? i could be wrong tho
In Adobe Illustrator I've changed the paint brush style to something else, (this happens with stroke size too) but the moment I start trying to paint the settings revert back to what they were before I started.
There is a range of different characteristics for your brushes which can be adjusted in the settings panel under your color wheel. To see the full range of settings, click the gear icon and set the mode to Full.
While we are working on improvements to our brush engine, we'd love to get feedback from you. Please let us know about your experience of the new Advanced Brush Settings by filling out this survey: (Link incoming)
The Paint tool has two main interface panels. The Paint Library is used for creating new and selecting existing brushes. The Paint Settings allows fine tune adjustment to your currently selected brushes.
Density is directly related to object padding. If greater density is needed and increasing density appears to have little effect, reducing the padding amount to negative values can help in increasing the density of the brush.
Back in 2014, Melissa Gallo, a Corel Master and great painter, created Painting with Photoshop Workshop with 26 videos. It contained all kinds of brushes, patterns, actions, etc., that covered everything needed to learn to paint in PS. It is still available on her site and worth getting if you are really interested in learning to paint with PS. One of the her videos has a very uncomplicated way of looking at the Color Dynamic sliders. The other major reference for this is from David Belliveau, who mainly draws portraits in Photoshop (he offers a free class a couple times a year which are excellent so look for this) and has some wonderful free PS brushes (scroll down the page to find them). He covered this topic in Brushmakers Blueprint, a video from 2016 which appears to be only available on his member site.
Control: In the above brush settings, Control is set to off as I liked the effect I was getting as is. By switching in the drop-down to Fade with Foreground/Background Jitter set to 0, it takes 25 steps (if that is the number chosen in this field) to go from the foreground color to the background color. If set to Pen Pressure, it lets you paint using foreground to background colors depending on how hard you press (when using a tablet & pen). Many people just use this and not change much else in the panel.
