Speaker: Leonid Fridman
Occasion: Anti-intellectualism in the U.S
Type of text: Article
Strong verb: Juxtapose
"America Needs It's Nerds" is an article penned by Leonid Fridman, were he passionately argues how our "nerds and geeks" are being "ostracized for their intelligence" in Americas society. Fridman discusses his judgement about Americas anti-intellectual values while athletic abilities are being held in high esteem. His principle is to show that the nerds and geeks that we shamefully ridicule should be idolized and appreciated. The public should be more aware about what is happening to the "academically serious" and "intellectually curious." His stand point developed through comparing and contrasting countries that are an economic rival such as East Asia. He addresses how American society's high anti-intellectualism differentiate us from most industrialized nations. "How can a country where typical parents are ashamed of their daughter studying mathematics ... or their son reading Weber ... be expected to compete in the technology race with Japan ..." Fridman illustrates that if America does not embrace lauding their intellectuals we will be surpassed by other countries in the technology race. Fridman juxtapose the rival nations perspective on intellect versus Americas values to develop his argument― America should do the same in admiring and acknowledging it's smart people.
